Hope this works and helps people compare last year: 2009 V 2010.

Bright Green = Snow last year not this year

Gray = Snow this year not last year

Dark Yellow = Ice this year not last year

White = Snow both years.

Yellow = Ice both years

Last years looks better - Iceland and Scandinavia have much more.

If I have worked this out correctly: [based on pixel count]

Last year had 3% higher snow cover at this stage:

gray = 5214

green = 5995

white = 17929

this year = 23143

last year = 23924

This year cover is 97% of last year.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I attempted it a while back using a very old version of photoshop... and failed.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I attempted it a while back using a very old version of photoshop... and failed.

Used Fireworks 2004 -> used two layers, blend mode set to "color" for top layer (2010).

Used Photoshop CS4 for pixel count, using histogram window to show pixels, with magic wand (Tolerance 0, anti-alias OFF, Contiguous OFF and Sample All Layers OFF.) to select colours.

A better way to do it would be to choose select -> colour range to do the white pixel count.

You'll like this one guys.... I have made a Javascript that displays the past 5 years snow cover from Autumn onwards in a grid side by side:

http://www.kitchenappliancesforum.co.uk/Script.html

You will need to zoom out until you can see FIVE maps side by side otherwise it wont make much sense.

Aha - nice to see some white appearing over Scotland so early, though not sure how long the pixels will remain on the map :-)

Cheers

Yeah of course... it updates dynamically...

I have added options to let you choose what YEAR to start from and What DAY to start from

click here to visit the ice and snow checker!

(remember... you will have to zoom out depending on how many years back you go so that it fits on the screen in a nice row!)

From Arctic Ice Thread.

The latest Sea Ice Extent figures are 7,428,594 km2, which is 271,295 below recent averages and 1,357,381 below longer term averages. Ice Growth this week was 95,000 which is above long term averages but below short term averages. Ice growth seems to be better than last year, but behind how it was in 2008, as was the trend on the previous update.

Ranking 6th of 8 (Recent) 30th of 32 (Long Term) (Above 2007 and 2009)

The biggest change on tady's pic', is the HUGE snowfall over mongolia!

A good sign if you're looking for a strong siberian high this winter since this region I believe helps with ozone production later into the winter when there is deep snowcover.
