How do you even go about getting lightning shots like that? Please explain!

Nothing happening here by the way, but you knew that.

Hi Northants

a bit of pashents and luck

I have a Canon Eos 1000D, its an entry level digital SLR but it does the job

The camera does most of the work to be honest, the hard part was trying to focus in the dark.

I had the camera in aperture priority mode, the camera choses the shutter speed to allow for a balanced exposure and thats that.

The shutter was open from 15 - 30 seconds which allows plenty of time to catch a flash of lightning.

Did any storms go up through Coventry yet? I'm not there yet but still rooting for it from afar. :p

Enjoy.. :)

Can't complain because I got caught up in the Sheffield storm a couple of weeks ago. Not expecting much here until late morning really. That's if the storms don't split and head either side of us, as is usually the case in this sort of set up.

Dont think so. They mainly went from Wiltshire via Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Dudley, Wolverhampton before beginning to die off at around Stafford/Stoke.

Just the one or two rumbles in the end here. Night all. :D

Just back from Portsdown hill a nice little show but it started tipping down just after I arrived so didn't dig the camera out. Every man and his dog was up there watching the sparks but it seems non of you lot were, light weights lol

Lets hope tomorrow come through now.

I see IoW weather has been taken down by the number of people using it!

Looking at http://www.sat24.com/gb the stuff that is hitting NW France looks like it's intensifying quite nicely - next couple of hours could be interesting :)

Sarkozy's Storm Shield is working wonders sadly, convectional rain can't make it 10 miles into the channel before being replaced by plain rain!:wallbash:

Wow this has to be one of the best nights in a long long time, all started with that Shelf cloud and gust front that past threw. Had some Amazing Lightning on and off all night, the storm we had produce some unbelievable CG'S and CC'S, lots of Anvil crawlers. Theres been about 8/9 Storms go threw tonight with all amazing Lightning.

Would believe it, we have another lil thunderstorm over us now, saw 2 amazing CG's about 10 minutes ago, and had extremely loud crack of thunder about 3 minutes ago.

Lightning going off every 30 secs as well!!!!!!!!!

had a downpour around 1am ,first rain for as long as i can remember! good for the snails, anyway it would be more exciting to include other activity.

this situation is where thunderstorms spark off again, i expect an active time towards morning, from the south/se then these storms moving north..

Plenty of rain overnight here in Buckinghamshire, which was very welcome indeed, a few flashes and a couple of distant rumbles that's about all. Things surprising still look fairly good with what's coming over the channel, dawn activity cant be bad lol
