Just back from a couple of hour stint on the cliff top just outside Hastings, where for an hour or so a storm in Northern France delivered some impressive c-g lightning. I honestly think all is not lost in this neck of the woods just yet. Recent posts from guys who's opinion I really respect seem to bear that out as well.

Could you explain "Capped". I get the general idea that it means the conditions aren't right but I'm looking to learn a bit more.

Further more, what you saying is that the maoosive storm over West France may spawn some more activity north of that later on which may hit E Anglia?

Thanks for replying

Capped basically means that there is convective energy available but there's a lid on any of it being released - due to a layer of warm air aloft or subsiding air - both of which stop parcels of air rising.

I would think Sussex, Kent, London, Essex and Suffolk will likely see storms later maybe intially from a few storms developing ahead of the MCS and then perhaps a brush with the MCS itself if it continues intact on a NNE trajectory.

I dont think its quite right to blame the forecasters, thats nature for you in all its fickleness, all the ingredients were there, a shame but there you go....

cheers,

Steve.

Nah - don't shoot the messenger. A careful assessment of what's happened shows that it is the numerical weather prediction models that have handled this badly. I mean really badly. It shows how fragile, even 3 hours out, the models really are. I guess their skill comes from the normal statistical certainy that if you have a high pressure over you today the chances are you'll have one there tomorrow.

(Yes, yes - I know I'm being a tad unfair)

i never said shoot him, i said death by lightning! however i am fully aware its not his fault, the weather is a fickle thing we can predict but not promise. it did have a good stormy 'feel' today for a while but it didnt come off. anyway, a kent clipper looks like it has a fair chance of happening, but dont shoot me for saying it!
