Snow And Ice In The Northern Hemisphere 2011/12

Siberia and the NW passages look bloody cold next week. -24c uppers touching both. Beginning of the Siberian Hp possible also; Arctic high squeezed out. More permanent 980 low by Svalbard at the end of the hi-res so maybe northwesterly/northerly blast for Scandi come early November.

Nothing too promising - but the Siberian high is now taking it's place; but the dire state of Arctic ice is unsolvable at this moment.

I would really like to see the Siberian snow cover march westwards before the end of the month. There is a study that links the Siberian autumnal snowcover to colder weather due to stratospheric feedback in January - I will try and look for it later.

Cold arctic easterlies/nelies for a bit before that high pushes in, but as the high moves towards e Siberia towards halloween; cold southerlies move in.

The correlation between snow and circulation:

I was thinking that we could do with a more up to date bit of research. Thanks for linking that.

Looks like we are down in the critical areas, namely Siberia.

Been snowing all morning in Zermatt 2'050 m unexpectedly I think? Luvverly

Indeed it doesn't look that well.

Am I right in thinking after looking at a few forecasts that it looks like a fair amount of snow is due in Russia over the next week or so? Most at the weekend I think in the areas that need bumping up?

This is developing into a nightmare autumn as far as I can see! The stubborn high pressure over the European continent is feeding warm air into Russia/western Siberia and it just doesn't want to shift!

On a slightly brighter note, at least the ice is staying above the 2007 levels and increasing faster than the average rate for the time of the year. http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/N_timeseries.png

The ice did that last year as well as far as I remember.

I wouldn't worry about the snow yet, we still have plenty of time.

If it's still like that in the second week of november then worry! But it could be what we need for an early winter, somehow?

Yes, I might be worrying too early, I just don't like the high pressure over Europe as it can take forever to shift!

The snow will spread eventually, if it doesn't then It'll surely be a new record - no snow in Siberia!

Yeah but better it's there now than a month in the future when it will probably be gone and relax, we're in the the post-even larger teapot era now, the rules have got to be rewritten.

Excellent picture brings back memories. We went skiing in November 2007 on the Glacier. Oh I wish I was there.cray.gif
