Starting to get quite exciting, especially with the ice on the north east russion coast starting to grow and reach out. Looking at the last three diagrams together there has been some big growths!

Despite that, Arctic sea ice extent is still very low and is lower than what it was at this time last year. Only 2007 is lower than that and that is named as the death spiral year by scientists. Nearly over the last 12 months apart from a period in the springtime Arctic sea ice extent has been 3rd lowest to lowest ever on record, bit depressing really and it kinda makes a mockery on those ice age theories etc.

Out of interest, how is the snowcover doing in comparison to recent years? Whilst snowcover does not affect our weather imo, there is an theory that the quicker snowmelt we get these days could be one of many contributing factors to low ice extent in summer.

Looks like for now we are a decent bit down on N.Hemisphere snowfall, but its early enough in the winter that a good outpouring of cold from the Arctic could quickly shift those reds into blues...

Since 2004 (when the sattelite resolution was last upgraded), we are behind 2006 and 2009 but on par with most other years (i believe there are 2 lower than us.

So right now we are likely in 3-5 place since 2004.

Afternoon all!

Update is a bit late today as I'm house sitting and my aunty's computer is so old it's probably driven by valves and steam!

Anyways, today we've had a wee bit of meltback but the ice is almost at the coast now which usually causes an explosion of snowfall.

Yes I've noticed that........seems the sea ice is well down on this time last year

Here's the closest sea ice comparisons I could find as some dates aren't available. Anyway, even with the 2010 map 1 day behind, it still has plenty more ice

Morning all!!

Yes we are a fair bit down in places, especially northern Siberia, however, Scandinavia is doing pretty well for the time of the year.

Notice, it's where the ice touches the coast that we see the best snowfalls, so not long to go imo!

It looks as if the ice is going to meet the Russian Continent in a slightly more easterly position than last year, this might be why its taking longer as it's slightly further south than the 'sticky up bit' of central northern russia in 2010

Afternoon all!

Here's the anomoly image and the other NH image.

I'm wondering whether general lack of energy and activity in the Atlantic is hampering the production of snowfall over Russia?

I mean, if even we are struggling to get any rain here in the southern UK, then that precipitation must be even less down the line in western Russia?

The block of high pressure that the models are predicting in Eastern Europe is not good news.

It will keep the weather dry there and a southerly flow is likely to reach Scandinavia where there's been a lot of snowfall recently.

Snowfall for 12 hrs.

The yellow are is just 500 meters (1640 foot).

Yes, it's been very cold lately in the Balkans, Greece and western Turkey. The temperature is way below the average for October and mountains have received a nice covering of snow!
