Snow And Ice In The Northern Hemisphere 2011/12

Recommended Posts

Snow cover doesn't look too bad though there is a big negative departure over central Siberia. October is the big growing month so fingers crossed.

So the snow coverage this summer is lower than the 1995-2009 average which is already much lower than the long term average.

Do you not mean autumn?

Snow coverage is pretty much zero in summer.

I am pretty sure that chart with the big red area works against what the average should be on the 31st October rather than using a daily rolling average. I think this because we did not have that massive red blotch a few days ago and the other chart above shows us as being above average to end September.

Expecting big gains over Canada and central Siberia in around ten days or so as the north west passage is freezing again and ice is approaching the Siberian coast.

Seems to be some gains with no huge losses today.

Definitely doing better in Baffin Island! Down in Scandi though.

Scandinavia is pretty unimportant in overall snow cover until November onwards when easterlies can actually be cold, it's also a relatively small area.

True.. I guess we're not doing so badly, this month is when things start kicking off across Canada and Russia and northern Scandi anyway.

Snow! In Northern Iceland, a cool NE flow with roughly -5c uppers and a LP system in the Norwegian Sea. Sleet and snow all morning.

Also some snow in Svalbard but not lying apart from on the hills. Quebec snow currently, Northwestern Passage snow throughout the week. Scandinavian snow by the weekend.

According to EC12 of today, there's lots of snow to expect in a couple of days in Siberia. I have turned the picture, for a better view of Siberia. Especially in the Central Siberia Plateau.

Th e NW winds pushing across the UK are set to push through through to the Alps giving a second batch of snow to mid mountains levels, however this is not likely to last that long with temps soon recovering.

yep the area where I ski-Jungfrau region- could have 20-30cm from this first real cold shot, above about 4500ft; they had one 5-7cm covering a couple of weeks ago.

Hello John,

Lovely warm Autumns Day with temperature around 12 C. Wind picking though ahead of cold front expected to move through in the next 24 hours and to deposit a good covering of snow. Temperature of 0C expected in the village this time tomorrow and -4C on the summit top above the village. The recent

exceptional late summer temps back in England made the news in Austria !

hello Paul

Winter must be on its way for you to appear? Yes incredible run of sunny days and high temperatures, warm enough to sit out each evening for dinner, an unusual occurrence both for it being dark and so late in the year. Mean temperature here for the last 4 days of September and the first 5 here was 19.1C. Back to normal with around 12-14C and dipping to 10-11C in showers in abrisk westerly.

sorry off topic so yes re the snow

I find the link quoted at the start of my post(well above yours-since the new system came in I find it impossible to insert a link where I want it-probably me!) is pretty reliable-the Lauberhorn Downhill Race Committee use it, 16C now 3C by 0800 tomorrow in the village and snowing at 4000ft!

Looking on one of the lapland cameras, could it be about to snow if you quickly look

http://alk.tiehallin...a-C1451201.html

Very possibly - though it should be milder with the milder uppers overnight - Friday evening to Sunday and possibly beyond look good for widespread lapland snow.

That's for the nearest road weather station - all of the nearby stations in the region are quoting that as nearest. Temperatures are probably nearer 1-2c on the cam and with the lp in charge nr scandi currently, humidity will be v.high so dew points will nearly match the air temp.
