Morning!

Well, we've had a bit of a meltback compared to yesterday:-(

Never mind, it'll soon catch up.

The ice is interesting at the moment, there are 3 points which are about the same distance from the coast which may mean we get a massive bump once they reach the coast.

I suspect the reason that we have gained more slowly in the past week is because of the +AO which is locking all the cold air up in the Arctic. That said, we have still gained and should get a bump as ice increases.

Brrr that's going to be a shock to the system if it comes off after the current unseasonable heat.

Some sleet/wet snow and rain in Svalbard currently - next few days have a strong east to north flow with -5c uppers tonight moving in and -10c uppers later on next week. Iceland snow watch from Thursday and Scandi (at least higher scandi) snow watch from Friday with lowland scandi falls possible during the weekend!

Definitely winter goggles on after the heatwave here in Britain - the weather.noaa.gov/weather site is extremely good with many a metar around the globe :)

Quebec looks set for more snow later in the week as well.

Can we have some webcam links please, or perhaps open a winter webcam link thread?

Comparing this October 1st to previous years (page 6), it seems that last year is the only year since 2004 which is ahead of us. We really need that ice to get a move on though.

The patch is concentrated in the Tarfala-Mountain area, where there has been regular snow recently - there could be a few more in N Sweden and Norway by the weekend - Finland will be slower than usual this year with the snow moving from the N/NW not the NE/E as usual.

Snow cover doesn't look too bad though there is a big negative departure over central Siberia. October is the big growing month so fingers crossed.

Spot on ch, lots of cold coming down w siberia -5c upper line approaching - aswell as the -5's in Iceland today and Scandi by the weekend. Regarding the Scandi cold it's your run of the mill lp system tracking towards scandi bringing cooler air from the north with it - but a Scandi trough should follow and quite a cooler, more fluent northerly flow should follow I'd imagine.
