An overcast end to the day, with some drizzle here and there. Its much cooler though than yesterday, with temperature around 13-14*C for much of the day, as opposed to yesterday's 19*C in nice sunshine. Wind now a moderate south-easterly.

Thanks Pomeroy, but we lost by a point yesterday unfortunately. Still a very tight and exciting match though! :)

Today was great from mid morning on, warm for a change, weekend looking fresh with showers though. Hopefully Irish open will be ok, might be good for the Irish if its very wet though, foreigners won't like it though

There's some quite spectacular rain in the Belfast/Carryduff area at the moment following a thunderstorm. Localised flooding.

Yes Skywatcher, I drove from Carryduff down into East Belfast at 7.30. I have never driven in conditions like that in my life. Orby Drive was like a river.

I would expect some major flooding events are currently taking place.

More heavy rain pushing north now with more prolonged rain tomorrow.

Its been fairly dry for most of the day here, albeit cloudy, but the heavens have opened in the past half-hour (its stopped now). Seems our short lived heatwave is at an end, and the beginning of July doesn't look all that promising.

Temperature 13*C in a moderate easterly breeze.

Just been around the webcams of Belfast taking in the weather

This one http://www.trafficwa...treams/cam6.wvx

currently looks like slipways into the watercourse , rather that access to the flooded road !

Many roads are probably water courses now so take care there in northern Ireland

NI readers take note, most of Ireland has just seen 30-50 mms rainfall (Cork to Athlone towards central Ulster) overnight in heavy and at times intense thunderstorms -- there are reports of flooding in Cork and radar would suggest similar potential for many parts of Northern Ireland and Donegal this morning to mid-day as this warm frontal meso-scale thunderstorm complex comes further north. Expect 30-60 mms of rain and the possibility of severe flooding in some places, smaller drainage systems could easily be overwhelmed by this amount of rain following such a wet period. A separate thunderstorm complex over the Irish Sea near Wicklow at present bears watching for Down and Belfast later, as well as the Isle of Man and southwest Scotland.

Many observers on the Irish weather forum(s) are saying they have not seen lightning as intense as last few hours in many years, or ever before.

Some really torrential rain here in Cork last night, and a very powerful thunderstorm. The power went out for a good while earlier this morning, and there's been some severe flooding here in Douglas, as well as other parts of County Cork. The water is nearly 2 feet deep in parts:

Apparently Clonakilty in West Cork was hit badly, as well as parts of Northern Ireland in Counties Down and Antrim.

June has apparently, according to Met Eireann, been the wettest on record.

Hope everyone's OK.

Here we go again in Belfast. Surely not as bad as last night (?) but on soaking ground this is going to cause problems. Thunderstorms to the right and left of us for about an hour but it looks like we're in the firing line for this one.

Nearly drove into 4 feet of water last night on the road home from Lisburn. It was on a stretch of road with no street lights either, very treacherous indeed. South, East and West Belfast suffered the worst by the looks of it. North Belfast is a bit hillier, hence why we escaped the worst of it.

A calm and dry day today, not much rain about. The clean-up here in Douglas is still underway, although it could take several weeks. The main shopping centre in town has been utterly ruined, it could take weeks before its up and running again.

Cloudy at the moment in a moderate south-westerly breeze. Temperature 13*C.

It seems as though we may see a warm up as the week progresses. Its been fairly miserable here today, plenty of cloud and rain about. Not too warm either, temperatures topped about 14*C I think, with more rain expected tonight and tomorrow.

New flood warnings for Northern Ireland as rain

continues

DSC_0132_2_694110g2.jpg

It may be the holiday season for many, but Northern Ireland is facing a weekend of turbulent weather — as floods cause havoc for holidaymakers across the UK and Ireland.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Northern Ireland which extended from this morning until midnight. Areas of Belfast, and counties Armagh and Down could be hit by 40mm to 80mms of rain. Forecasters have also predicted persistent rain which could cause excessive surface water and rivers to burst their banks, triggering flooding. Flash floods caused extensive damage in homes and schools across Belfast and outlying regions more than a week ago.

Meanwhile, three hours of heavy rainfall caused havoc in south Down on Thursday, flooding homes and blocking roads. But Northern Ireland largely escaped the heavy rainfall which caused havoc in parts of the Republic and the UK yesterday. A month’s rain fell in parts of the UK yesterday. More than 120 flood alerts were in place in England and Wales

Well, our brief summerful few days has dispersed again. Jetstream heading South again for at least 7-10 days now. Temps average - below. Showers and rain again on the cards. Hopefully August or September can deliver a nice 2 weeks of sunshine, otherwise I fear I may become ghostly white in the Winter cool/cold sunshine.

Haven't been able to get on for a while as some may have noticed, just got the PC repaired but back for the foreseeable future at least.

Roll on Autumn 2012 and Winter 12/13.

It certainly has been a very gloomy month, with not much of an improvement from June. This could have an effect on what weather we will see down the line, especially in Autumn. If I'm honest, I think this year is shaping up to be a lot like last year; warm spell during spring, very cool and wet summer.

Lets hope next month has more summery weather in store.

Been in Kerry caravaning for the last week, and it has been brilliant, up until today! The wind today has been constantly high allied with heavy rain! Might have to take down the awning tonight, before mother nature does it for me... I'm leaving in the morning anyway!

If I was to sum up Summer so far, it'd be "The Winter of a Snow lovers dream" synoptic wise. Plenty of Greenie High influence and plenty of precipitation. Come October/November, it'll be the opposite again with The Azores High more of an influence. Sad times.

Who knows however, one flick of a switch and we'll be getting the bbqs out and having a few bevvies in a few weeks and ordering pallets of Sleds in for a whiteout winter.

It's not boring weather however, plenty of convection and storm risk days.

Today has certainly been a horrible day, the first day in a while without any sunshine to speak of. Its also been fairly windy, and its expected to get even windier over the next few days, particularly across the south. Happy day! rolleyes.gif

While there has been some convective interest this summer, it is still a little disappointing to have not had a decent warm and dry spell yet, especially after a rather dull winter. It seems likely though that as El Nino begins to engage with the atmosphere more, that we'll get kicked out of this pattern soon enough.

Also, when Autumn arrives and those very mild sea surface temperatures around the Arctic release their heat, it's likely to cause some big changes in the northern hemisphere circulation patterns
