Hi guys,

Just and update on todays prospects for our region, and what areas should expect.

Already there is a lot of freezing rain out there, some reports of light snow for N Yorkshire, and some sleet for areas a little further South. There is 2 main areas of interest throughout this afternoon/early evening and later into tonight.

The first is the current precipitation heading across N Yorkshire (the first line of precipitation closer to the East Coast) this one will start to head south, before moving more SW across West & South Yorkshire. This precipitation will fall as rain/freezing rain, but increasingly becoming of snow as we head into the late afternoon/early evening period.

You can see on the current image below the 2 areas of interest;

Accumulations of 2-5cm's for West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire later this evening, but please don't be surprised if it turns out be rain, it really is marginal out there, and is a headache to forecast.

The second area of interest is for East Yorkshire and N Lincolnshire, if you look at the second line of precipitation developing in the North Sea (Look East) this is expected to itensify, the colder air is already starting to undercut across these parts, with it will come better conditions, isotherm, dew points etc. What I expect with this current band is for it to bring a period of heavy snow across East Yorkshire & N Lincolnshire, I would expect the precipitation in these areas around 4-5pm. There's a chance it may be more prolonged and slow moving as currently expected. I expect it to move away South Westwards as it pivots, feeding the heavier precipitation into South Yorkshire.

As the precipitation moves away as pressure builds from the East, the precipitation will swiftly move South Westwards, which I think will cause a merge of the 2 areas of precipitation, I expect parts of South Yorkshire to get some pretty prolonged snowfall for a time, with South Yorkshire for me the area to be for accumulations, and the heaviest of the precipitation.

My current expectations are;

West Yorkshire - 1-2cm's of snow for lower areas, 4-5cm's higher ground * although I still feel it's borderline for West Yorkshire with the heaviest of the precipitation likely to be south of the region.

North Yorkshire - Majority of freezing rain, turning to snow later this afternoon, elevated locations 3-4cm's possibly locally more.

South Yorkshire - 2-5cm's quite widely, with as much as 10cm's possible, if my thinking is correct with the 2 areas of precipitation merging, I think the 10cm's could be reached, particulary across higher ground.

East Yorkshire - 1-2cm's of snow, if the precipitation is heavy and no prolonged in nature, and does fall of snow, possible highest accumulative totals to be around 4-5cm's, possibly more*

N Lincolnshire - 2-4cm's for Northern Lincolnshire. precipitation more patchier as you head into SE parts of Lincolnshire.

Please don't take the above as a certainity, I just thought I would try and get a grip on what's happening out there and to try and make a prediction, in all seriousness it's a messy picture out there.

Good Luck guys,

Lewis

thankyou for a fantastic post, it has put a smile on my face :good:

There must be a point when it gets so cold that it must snow.

Maybe we need heavier precipitation.. and that heavier precipitation doesn't appear to have our name on it

It's now snowing in East Hull too. GET IN! NO RAIN :D

Now all we need is heavy precipitation :)

We could end up doing quite well later.All that PPN in the north sea is very interesting to say the least.
