Yes Kate, as to your last questions, I don't know? :unknw:

However, this was taken from the snow and frrezing rain risk thread and was posted by our very own Nick L. I hope this helps, but don't ask me to interpret these charts, you will have to look in the learners forum for an answer to that. All we need are a few skew-T charts for our area tonight?

The skew-T from Nottingham shows us why quite nicely...

The left hand line represents dew point, the right temperature. So the closer they are together the moister the air. Higher up the air is saturated (cloud cover), nearer the surface it is much, much drier so the precipitation simply evaporates. As we head through the day, the air near the surface will become more moist...

Let us hope this lack of precipitation trend does NOT continue. :wallbash:

Regards

gottolovethisweather in Newbury, Berks where it is currently 0.4c AT, -2.1c DP

Thanks for copying that, already done it enough this afternoon

Soundings looking far more promising for our region come nightfall...

I'm not going to go into the details of what these represent (we spent a good couple of lectures learning them!) but the main thing is the closer the two black lines are between 1000 and 800mb the more moist the air. The right line represents temperature, the left dew point. The closer these are together the more moist the air.

The problem further north at the moment is that the surface air is so dry that the precipitation is simply evaporating before it reaches the ground. But as more PPN evaporates, the air becomes more and more wet, so by the time it reaches us we will have some moist air to prevent this happening all being well.

Now all we need is the actual precipitation and favourable temperatures!

Met office updated forcast to heavy snow for Bournemouth at midnight!! First time that's been forcast. They are changing the forcast by the hour though. It may well show rain soon!

If you look at http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ you can see the band approaching. Have to say that I can't see this moving too far SW as forecast previously. Looks like the whole South coast may get something tonight if it continues this path. Breaking up though so scattered showers by the time it gets to us I think.

Anyone know if the PPN on this radar is consistent with what's falling in the Midlands at the moment?

Obvious troll is obvious! Please don't be alarmed by this post folks, it's not going to be anything worse than we saw on Saturday, let alone the past generation.

Currently 0.1c/DP 0c here, so the air is pretty much saturated unlike further north.

NMM 6z indeed looks good for you guys with snow feeding by the evening and continuing until early tomorrow morning, especially in Wiltshire and Dorset.

I wouldn't even bother with the models anymore frankly for this, just keep refreshing the radar.

Funny you mention that as I was just looking out of the window for my best lamp post view

This will be my first snow watch in this house.

People must think we're a right bunch of nutters :D

They think that here. I take a lot of photo's of wildlife and weather so I'm always popping my head out. It's embarrassing :D

Temp above freezing down here, and at current rate will take 8 hours to reach freezing point. Overcast so falling temps are a struggle in these conditions.
