Just been out to test it, and the snow is quite crisp now, no slush at all even on the road. I must admit, it would be nice to bring the total up to the magic 10cm tomorrow before the rain sets in, but I doubt it'll happen.

Are snow depths usually measured on grass or concrete? The grass has about 8cm now, whereas there is just shy of 5cm on the pavements as the snow kept melting this afternoon between the showers.

I'm pretty sure that it's on the grass, as most Met Office sites are in open fields.

It lost intensity over Newton Aycliffe and I presume Darlington. We had about 20 minutes in the end with no real depth worth reporting - everything is white, but it's more of a dusting than proper cover.

Exactly the same here lasted about 20mins but nothing heavy, covered the ground though

Thanks - I have a 3 inch cover then!!

Not that these technicalities *really* matter though, so long as it all looks nice.

Hi is the front coming this evening or in the night ??

I'm expecting it to hit NW England by dawn, and NE England mid morning or soon after.

Double excitement for me today - I just got my first university offer to study maths at Leeds next year :D

Its more like a winter storm rather than the front.

Getting increasingly excited for tomorrow.

At the moment it's just bitterly cold at 0'C

latest BBC forecast, had it zoomed in, didn't seem to show any rain - just heavy snow - here in Leeds. Think we'll have intermittent bursts of both if i'm honest. fascinating. the pennines will be treacherous and Scotland very snowy indeed. and to think, the cold spell may not have come yet!

Frequent heavy snow and hail showers here all day. Settled in the heavier showers but has since melted. Ice will be a major problem in the morning here no doubt

Beeb forecast light NO tomorrow for us then heavy rain. Since there's no real cold uppers I suspect NO is the more likely event.

Dreadful under foot this morning and the roads weren't gritted either. Nothing better try to cross a busy main road trying to keep upright. Since none of the driver had spotted a snow flake they were feeling confident and not really driving with black ice in their mind.

Mods think its def time for regional threads now!

Specs on the way for you matey. It is a regional thread. doh.gif

Nah that won't happen

We'll get some initial snow tomorrow morning before it turns to rain.

^^ aha we certainly have aided confusion in these parts. "heavy snow" and "no snow" all from the same forecast. awkward
