Thames Barrier shuts for the first time in two years to prevent flooding in London

The Thames Barrier is one magnificent piece of engineering thats for sure.

On a totally seperate note I can't seem to activate 'smileys', that whole area appears 'faded out' on my screen. Any idea why folks ?

I wouldn't take that as gospel. Just the media stirring things up with their mythological ideas !

Any system moving out of the States, cold or warm, will be modified by the sea temperature in the Atlantic, and will fall on us as the same old stuff, persistent rain and wind!

Morning all. :)

Light rain here; in fact the type of weather I'd describe as dross.

Ridiculously quiet at work. I suppose the benefit being that I can get on with things. :) The disadvantage being that I can think of many things I'd rather be doing.

Morning all you regionals!!

Raining like fury here, damp and dark means getting out all the waterproofs again as I've so much I want to do outside today.

So who's on to Turkey curry, soup or pie now? laugh.png

A new record has already been set for England with 1,095.8mm falling in the year up to Boxing Day. Localised flooding BBC weather forecaster Mike Silverston said much of the UK would see heavy rain and strong winds heading into the weekend.

Up to 40mm of rain is expected fall in the South West on Saturday, with Wales and areas of north-west England expected to see between 60-80mm. He said because of the continuing saturated state of the ground this might lead to further localised flooding.

Any New Years eve revellers could be caught in the heavy rain if they're outside:

Tweet just seen..

Met Office @metoffice 10m

Friday fact: The deepest snow recorded this year was 16 cm, at Malham Tarn and Buntingford on the 5 February bit.ly/12DNJlh

ah...the memories of that bitter winter we had last year in Hertfordshire :-)

Calling it with four days of the year still to go......sometimes the models can inspire confidence!

Perfect Storm's home town too. Where is he? If he ever complains about not seeing some decent snow again, he's in trouble.

Mind you, what that does show, is how poor it has been for lying snow but I can certainly remember many other years lacking much of the white stuff too. help.gif

Roll on 2013, I think it will be a good one, I can feel it in my flood water. rofl.gif

So here's the dilemma;

Go out for a long walk across country in the pouring rain, with a wet smelly dog and mud up to my armpits. Or stay in with a selection of fine English and Continental cheeses, crisp crackers, some tawny + ruby ports and lush home made sloe gin, watching a re-run of Zulu?

You can see where this is going....... :whistling:

I've already made my plans for later..... sausage rolls, smoked cheese and twiglets, some nice drinkies, and a DVD good.gif

It was good to get out earlier though, it's not a very pleasant day but it isn't actually raining here, I called into the shops on the way back and got a cashmere jumper in the sale..... I'd had my eye on it before Christmas but had resisted so that was a result smile.png
