I was able to travel 27 miles today and all the main roads/back roads were clear, why are schools/colleges shut today?!

Light flurrys here for most of the morning, obviously not enough for any kind of accumulation. Temperatures just creeping above freezing, not expecting too much of a thaw though today.

Compensation culture. i wonder how much influence the insurance companies have over decisions?

A reminder of how dangerous it is, my friend has just fallen in the ice and smacked her head on the pavement, says she feels sick, trying to persuade her to go to a and e, could be concussed.(i told her that wearing fashion boots in this was not a good idea)

Its one of my worst fears falling in the ice and i had a long pm conversation about it and how to be safer last winter

Yes its the barmy H&S brigade, luckily my daughter goes to a school where the head does everything possible to stay open.

Saying that though i just took my other daughter to pre-school which is in the same grounds as the Primary, and while i was there a huge avalanche of snow slid off about ten of the solar panels on the roof and into the playground, they were on dinner break at the time but luckily there wasn't any children underneath it, i think a small child would have been flattened by the amount that came down.

after seeing that documentary on 1963 the other night.......were we to experience even 2 weeks like that, let alone 2 months!!!!

the country would implode !

I'd prefer to think that when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

I've heard of these shoe accessories called Yaktrax which you fit over your shoes and boots — but you must take them off when on indoor hard surfaces as you'd slip. Great for walking to work.

Fashion boots in this snow and ice? Physically drag her to A&E, she could have cracked her skull and needs an X-ray. And some girl died after walking back from a night out in Kent last night not wearing a coat — I feel sorry for her, but you have to say Darwin strikes again.

Jenny please whatever it takes make your friend go to A and E immediately, she musn't take any chances with a head injury.

It could be just concussion it could also be much worse, don't take no for an answer!

I have some things like Yaktrax, I got them from the AA i think they were about £6 two winters ago.Very useful. But i always make sure i go out in my real winter boots with the nonslip wide grooved tread where possible. My friend thought she would be ok as she was only going down her road, just shows you, anyway her husband is looking after her, and will take her to hospital if she gets worse.

She said she went to walk from the road to the curb, which was covered in snow, misjudged it, put her foot on some ice which had built up in the gutter, her leg went out from under her, straight backwards, nothing to hold onto, and she hit the back of her head very hard.Luckily a man saw it happen and helped her up.

yes, me and southernman and her daughter have all said the same.I think her husband will take her.

Had a little extra snow during the early hour, scraped the snow off the car after my walk last night and to my surprise there was an extra centimetre on the car this morning. Anyway life goes on and I have to go into town, should be fun. Beware of kids on their days off pelting everyone with snowballs probably :p

Amazing eh, out of the 140 people here at work 138 made the effort to get to work , yet all the schools are closed cos its too snowy to travel, god knows what would happen if it was really bad !

Hello 80's Weather,

I ventured up to your neck of the woods yesterday (Hertford) to visit my son. In Chelmsford it had been snowing that very fine but heavy type all morning and we had quite a bit on the ground although the main roads were fine. When we got to Godmanchester there appeared to be less snow on the ground but apparantly it had began to fall much later. We left at about 18.30 and the estate roads were quite bad and the road through Godmanchester was not that great but the A14 was fine. When we got to th M11 it was much worse and I kept my speed down. In spite of this athough I was only doing about 40-45mph the car suddenly started to slide alll over the place and I very nearly lost control of it. This made me even more careful for the rest of the drive home, There were, however, a few idiots who insisted on overtaking still at speed in spite of the conditions but generally the majority of drivers were driving in a very responsible manner.

The A120 was even worse as was the rest of the route home and instead of the journey taking about 75 minutes it took about 2 hours 10 minutes. I was glad to get home in one piece. We seemed to have even more snow as it had continue to fall for the remainder of the day.

I walked down to the railway station this morning (I always do as I like to keep fit- a distance of just over one and a half miles) and it was really beautiful along my usual walk which includes a section along the river.

Got to work in NW1 without too much hastle with the trains to find that it had started snizzling as I walked along Euston Road towards where I work. Lots of people have not made it into work today, including several from south of the Thames and quite a few from as far afield as Cambridgeshire.

The weather is a lot brighter and the sun is now shining. If there are clear intervals overnight the temperature will definitely tumble.

Is there any chance that central Essex will receive any snowfall overnight?

Kind regards

Dave

Compared to the past few days this week is looking pretty uneventful.

Sharp frosts by night though especially with any cloud breaks where temps will fall drastically.

Susan Powell just mentioned 'mild and wet' come the weekend......... Nooooooooo :-(

Another motoring hazard is people taking their kids out on the road with sledges.

Yesterday I went down to the shop only doing 20 mph as the snow was about 10cm deep and came around a corner to see 3 little kids all over the road being taken for a walk by their grandparents… of course I braked, but the car started to skid slightly and I could have easily gone into them.
