Evening all :)

Well, a remarkable day, no question. About five inches of level snow here in lowland East London, about the same as December 2010 and a notch less than February 2009.

The snow was relentless but the temprerature remained very close to freezing - just below though did hit zero briefly mid afternoon so not an ice day. A gentle fall off in the past few hours and it does look as though we are moving toward a regime of slightly above freezing maxima and much lower minima over the next three or four days.

Surprisingly, pressure is still falling so the possibility of more snow must remain. The other aspect that I've observed is how temperatures are at their lowest immediately prior to a snow fall and then rise once the snow starts falling. Will be interesting to see how London deals with the morning.

Hoping we can squeeze another "event" in before the atlantic rolls in later in the week.

Anyone offering some hope?

Ok, so it's been snowing here all day - very light mostly so not much accumulation. Now the radar is clear and I can see stars overhead, but under my lamp post it looks like someone is pouring glitter down very lightly. Doesn't look like snow under the lamp post - very sparkly - any ideas??!

It has also turned the snow on the grass and cars etc sparkly!

It certainly has been a very different day. I have rarely seen such fine snow, fall so densely and for so long. Usually it will either die back or pep up into larger flakes. Today though it kept on in Canterbury for virtually 12 hours , falling at about 1cm per hour.

Tonight there will be a big freeze , so take care on the roads.

Still snow grains falling - 13hrs of continuous snowfall, never seen that! The top of the kids playhouse in the garden measured 11cm at 3.30, didn't get a ground measurement - everywhere looks different levels cos of slight drifting in yesterdays winds! Another lovely day in my snow history!x

We get that a lot here when the air is cold and the air particles almost freeze and look like glitter in the air, even with a blue sky. Not sure of the scientific reason but I thought it was moisture in the air freezing

Good idea but not really any breeze here at the moment.

Oh ok - that sounds plausible. It looks amazing but slightly concerning for the school run tomorrow!

If you look closely you can see tiny individual snowflakes in the glitter - like little stars - have no idea why this has happened and have never seen it before. Maybe because it was powder snow that fell in the daytime?

Looks like that's pretty much it. 14 hours worth with a bonus burst for a couple of hours this evening. No idea what depth we have - somewhere between 10-15cm maybe a little more?

A great day and pleasing it was so widespread.

Found this online

Diamond dust occurs when there is a winter temperature inversion -- with the air coldest near the ground and a warmer, moister layer of air lying over it. The diamond dust forms when the warmer air blends with the colder, and the moisture it contains condenses out in the colder air, freezing into tiny motes of ice. These fine motes drift and sparkle, and eventually settle out, making them a type of precipitation as well as mist.
