See Englandshire has had 3cm of well forecast snow and ground to a halt

Nowhere in the populous areas of the UK copes well with snow. The main problem is that snow comes on and everyone rushes to get where they want to be. One small incident then becomes a major problem. People should heed the advice of the police and only travel if necessary, and certainly wait for a while after the snow has stopped to let the ploughs/gritters do their job.

Yes, it's ridiculous how a little bit of snow in the Home Counties causes so many problems. The Scotch are much better at coping with it although that's partly due to the lack of cars on the road.

Aye, but it plays havoc with our horses and carts though, I couldn't get Daisy out the stable yesterday !

Er... don't think we can play that card this time round - given what happened to the roads and pavements in and around Edinburgh yesterday with what was actually only 5-7cm of well forecast snow! After all their promises of being ready, very few roads were treated including some main roads, and the pavements were oddly polished by the wee lachine I saw whizzing along.

Major chicken-up, I would say. Very embarrassing. A Polish friend of mine is incredulous at the incompetence of the councils here.

Even up here in the NE where you expect snow on a regular basis, it can still cause chaos on the roads. There's that many factors that contribute...

1) Roads at near capacity in rush hour so when everyone slows down due to snow/ice it all just gridlocks, and you cant grit a gridlocked road

2) Poor driving, one accident and everything grids to a halt

3) Roundabouts and traffic lights on hills (major cause of problems in Aberdeen when it's icy/snowy as vehicles, especially trucks, can't get moving again after stopping)

4) Timing...heavy snow falling just as rush hour hits is a real killer. If it falls before people leave the house they'll think twice, if it falls after they do (even if it is forecast) it's too late usually.

As for "only travel if necessary", I've never really understood what exactly is "necessary". I may not think it is "necessary" to get into work but I'm not sure my boss would agree.

On to this morning.....another lovely bright and sunny start to the day. A warm +2 degC at 9am too, compared to yesterdays -8 degC at the same time. Snow cover held up quite well yesterday in Kemnay. South facing areas, especially tarmac, lost a lot of their cover but the more shaded areas, or where it was deep on grass areas, still have a full cover. I suspect today will be different as it's likely the sun, combined with higher air temperatures (yesterday was around +1 degC max) will do a bit of damage. Not sure I'm convinced of the BBCs forecast of more snow showers later today and overnight for the NE either.

Snow shower currently in Dyce. Doubt it'll lie though as air temp is a bit too warm and the snow is not heavy enough to overcome that.

Holy smoke!! (ooops, no, they haven't chosen a new pope yet)

I know they are just automatically generated but I can't remember seeing anything like this before on the 16 day NW forecasts, created by the ever so slightly epic 06z today.

In addition to that there are 7.1mm of precip forecast to fall as snow on the Sunday night and a further 4.65mm of precip forecast to fall as snow on the Wednesday morning.

By a rough add-up that's about 60mm of precip all forecast to fall as snow.

Winter, if you are going to go out with a bang please go out with something resembling a nuclear explosion

I think there's a justifiable case to be made for it having been 'the wrong kind of snow'. 3cm of slush with temperatures above freezing is a very different proposition to 3cm of powder with sub zero temperatures which is blowing and drifting in the wind.

Utterly treacherous on the pavements today, managed not to slip and fall over but the ice was lethal. I haven't seen a proper freeze up like that since December 2010.

Nail biting stuff, especially when forecasts like that are getting put out. No doubt will change at the next run. Interestingly the ECM had this low affecting us at +240hrs four days ago. I wonder how close to correct it will be?

Met-O weather warning for tonight and tomorrow out for the north and east:

Agreed. Managed to come off twice on my cycle to work - ouch! To be fair though only a complete muppet would have attempted it based on the state of the side roads!

Trying to summon up the energy to walk through Marchmont to get home from George Sq area... getting here involved mostly wlaking on the roads themselves, stepping in between parked cars when vehicles approached - plenty others doing the same, so there will be some nasty car/pedestrian incidents today, sadly.

Pavements a glossy white skating rink, except for where they are black-ice. :(

Met-O weather warning for tonight and tomorrow out for the north and east:

http://www.metoffice...nings/#?tab=map

Met O update for 6-15 days remaining cold with snow possibilities. UK Outlook for Sunday 17 Mar 2013 to Tuesday 26 Mar 2013:This weekend and next week conditions are set to remain unsettled and on the cold side for March. Many southern areas will be cloudy with rain and perhaps some hill snow. Other areas will see brighter weather with wintry showers, mainly in the north. Next week, often rather cloudy with further spells of rain or snow. Some heavy rain is likely at times, whilst northern, eastern and central parts have the greatest chance of any snow, leading to accumulations in places. Temperatures will remain below average; the nights frequently cold and frosty with icy patches, feeling cold by day, especially over northern Britain where it will often be windy. Looking beyond next week, conditions are expected to remain unsettled with below average temperatures.Updated: 1120 on Tue 12 Mar 2013Mostly cloudy here this morning so helping conserve the snow cover. Been dry but my wife said that she saw a couple of flakes in the air earlier. Warmer now at 4C.

this will prob be of no surprise but i'll take the NASA output from the 0z

atlantic well blocked off with nothing getting through that low pressure that came from the pacific area filling and merging with the low pressure over us with -10 uppers coming in from the north west and still a nice wee cold pool to our north east incase the winds swing round.
