I think it's looking like this at the moment. Obviously elevation and stuff helps as well.

This is presently how it is going by other peoples reports and my own findings. For our area, the snow line is just North of Ware which is mid Herts.

And here we are again!!!! ive probably spent more time talking snow this winter than anything else I've driven myself and anyone within earshot crazy talking about the white stuff I've lost FB friends where I think I've bored them to death - not everyone has the same passion for weather it seems :( so if its gonna happen then let it chuck it down trap us indoors for 24 hours then get the hell outta here until January 2014!!

tomorrow lunchtime more potential for heavier snow north of the river

then around 5 on chances rise further south

exact locations to be decided by looking out the window

cold around 2 degrees

bitter east south east wind and strong brrrrrrrrrrr

no point going further as the fax has changed

the front position so need to see tomorrows now

Well at least they are not pointing at each other now, earlier the ppn would have squized together and got really heavy in the middle between the two fronts.

My birthday tomorrow so it's bedtime for me. Must be up bright and early to build my birthday snowman, and make my birthday snow angels, and open all my snowy birthday presents. Did I mention it was my birthday tomorrow? Goodnight all.

Is that the 100% guaranteed non snowman Gary? ;-)

ED: Happy Birthday mate

The channel may be our foe during the Summer but it will be our friend tonight as it will aid the development of precipitation. Essex and Herts looks good for the highest totals as this system begins to pivot and the thames estuary also comes into play

Don't ask "where" Just read. Steve M might guess though.

More heavy snow is on the way during the next 24 hours, but as ever the details are still subject to change. The snow is being caused by weather fronts pushing north east into cold air over the UK. As the cold air undercuts the weather fronts the rain associated with them is turning to snow. The fax chart below produced by the UK Met Office shows the expected situation for 12GMT Saturday 22nd March. Weather fronts are straddled across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with Scotland under a very cold easterly flow. The key to the set-up is the blocking high pressure to the north of the UK which is forcing low pressure systems moving across the Atlantic to take a more southerly track than normal. This leaves us on their northern side with cold air flooding in from the north east.

fax.jpg?w=530&h=429

What does this mean in terms of the potential for snow? Through this afternoon and evening snow is most likely in central and northern regions, but tonight it looks as though it will push further south, possibly reaching London by the morning. The precipitation type forecast chart from the GFS computer model below (also for 12GMT Saturday 22nd March) shows what it expects to happen. Snow is indicated by the white hatched areas, and the precipitation intensity by the colour of the shading. By mid-day Saturday the GFS is forecasting the heaviest snow to be stretching north west to south east, from Northern Ireland to the south eastern corner of England.

In summary it looks as though large parts of the country will see snow during the next 24 hours and it will be heavy at times. I expect where the snow accumulates over low ground it will be tend to be wet and sticky. Over higher ground in the north the combination of slightly lower temperatures giving drier and lighter snow, and strong winds, could produce blizzard conditions and blowing snow for a while. Higher parts of the Pennines and Peak District could end up recording snow depths of at least 30cm and even in the densely populated south east, several cm of snow could accumulate on Saturday

Easter weather prospects? Yesterday I mentioned the possibility of it turning less cold during the Easter weekend. That’s still possible, but looking less likely than it did. The cold could be stubbornly hanging around. Certainly the run up to Easter looks cold with more snow showers in the east.

Ian F has just noted in the SW thread that the signal for snow to the North of London is strengthened on the latest models.

There will be snow in South London than just confined to the North of London biggrin.png
