Oh the joy. A quick glance at WUWT can warm the cockles of your heart on a wet March day. Actually AW made no comment but a glance at the comments of the illiiterati can make you feel quite sane; at least for a while. Be prepared to pop back a couple of years.

Dunning and Kruger in the Cenozoic Era at WUWT - very uplifting Posted Image

Anthony Watts has a new article on his blog today (archived here).  It's about a paper in Nature about some research estimating the amount of CO2 released by tectonic activity, I suppose you'd call it.  When mountains are formed and fresh rock is exposed the scientists postulated that there was more chemical reactions going on than previously thought, releasing CO2.  The work was done by Mark A. Torres, A. Joshua West & Gaojun Li.

Linking storms to climate change a ‘distraction’, say experts

Connecting extreme weather to climate change distracts from the need to protect society from high-impact weather events which will continue to happen irrespective of human-induced climate change, say experts.

Excellent article

Alley & Mann Op-Ed in Local Paper

Richard Alley and Mike Mann have coauthored a defense of climate science for their local State College PA newspaper, the Centre Daily Times.

Not every town has two people like Alley and Mann in it. So this deserves being spread around beyond central Pennsylvania.

Abbott launches new assault on clean energy

The Tony Abbott government has launched a new assault on the country’s clean energy institutions, deciding to make a second attempt to try and scrap the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

The introduction of a second bill into the House of Representative on Thursday morning comes as concerns increase about the future of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency – the once $3.2 billion institution designed to foster emerging technologies.

Obsessing over climate change is distracting politicians from dealing with floods and storms, experts warned yesterday..Posted Image

The Prime Minister said man-made climate change was ‘one of the most serious threats’ the country faced and that he ‘very much suspected’ it caused the floods in Somerset and along the Thames Valley.

Permafrost Thaw Exacerbates Climate Change

Falmouth, Mass. March 1, 2014 – The climate is warming in the arctic at twice the rate of the rest of the globe creating a longer growing season and increased plant growth, which captures atmospheric carbon, and thawing permafrost, which releases carbon into the atmosphere. Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) Assistant Scientist Sue Natali and colleagues engineered first-of-a-kind warming experiments in the field to determine net gains or losses in carbon emissions. The study entitled “Permafrost degradation stimulates carbon loss from experimentally warmed tundra,†published in the journal Ecology found that growing season gains do not offset carbon emissions from permafrost thaw. - See more at: http://whrc.org/news/pressroom/PR-2014-Natali-Permafrost-Ecology.html#sthash.Oh1eOSea.dpuf

Not sure I understand the point you're trying to make.

The report says people are making money out of global warming. You think that is good or bad? Or do you think that means global warming is happening (changing your stance?) or that is still isn't happening so they're wrong and there isn't money to be made out of global warming? Or are you saying something else? (bearing in mind you posted it to the sceptic thread).

Well it's fairly old news GW and not important but I see AW has just caught up with it. HotWhopper has dealt with this and I agree with her that Eli's take on it is a must read. Hope this clarifies things.Posted Image

Nick Stokes has been working on this and some might find it interesting if a tad complicated. I haven't had chance to really look at it so can't comment except it may be a tad complicated for my ageing brain.

In the previous post, in response to a challenge posed by Gavin at Real Climate for better ways of visualizing Phanerozoic climate data, I showed an interactive plot mechanism which could allow the user to easily vary the time scale in a single plot environment. The mechanics really come from the Moyhu climate plotter, and I've been meaning to work up a new version of that (and it's time to update with 2013 data).

Letters expose Aussie Government to climate fraud http://t.co/MUThLlG39G

I'm not going to spend much time on this but just to say you can really pick your sources Keith. I would avoid this bunch like the plague.

John O'Sullivan is leader of a group of activists who deny that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has any global warming affect. In the beginning of 2010, they published a book Slaying the Sky Dragon," in which they claim increased carbon dioxide emission is actually good for us.

O'Sullivan has been promoting this book and himself, his other writings, his fascade company called Principia Scientific International, and soliciting public donations through false professional and academic credentials. He is falsely claiming to be a lawyer who has "successfully litigated for more than 13 years in New York and Federal 2nd District courts," a member of the American Bar Association, a legal consultant employed by the British Columbia law firm Pearlman Lindholm, and a science journalist with more than 150 major articles published worldwide including in National Review and Forbes magazines. None of those claims are true.

Or for more detail but frankly I think most people have better use for their time.

Global warming to hit Asia hardest, warns new report on climate change

Flooding, famine and rising sea levels will put hundreds of millions at risk in one of the world's most vulnerable regions

People in coastal regions of Asia, particularly those living in cities, could face some of the worst effects of global warming, climate experts will warn this week. Hundreds of millions of people are likely to lose their homes as flooding, famine and rising sea levels sweep the region, one of the most vulnerable on Earth to the impact of global warming, the UN states.

The report – Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability – makes it clear that for the first half of this century countries such as the UK will avoid the worst impacts of climate change, triggered by rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. By contrast, people living in developing countries in low latitudes, particularly those along the coast of Asia, will suffer the most, especially those living in crowded cities.

A final draft of the report, seen by the Observer, will be debated by a panel of scientists set up by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this week at a meeting in Yokohama, Japan, and will form a key part of the IPCC's fifth assessment report on global warming, whose other sections will be published later this year.

According to the scientists who have written the draft report, hundreds of millions of people will be affected by coastal flooding and land loss as global temperatures rise, ice caps melt and sea levels rise. "The majority of it will be in east, south-east and south Asia. Some small island states are expected to face very high impacts."

I'm starting to come across comments from some forums from deniers who appear to believe that anyone who believes in AGW is currently "Dancing in the Streets" about the prospect of an El Nino forming????

Why would they choose to do such? Are they so afraid of the global temp spike any large Nino would drive "Ending the hiatus" ?

Seeing as they have spent the years since 97's Super Nino's comparing temps with that abnormal spike in global temps I think that they are more afraid that folk will rightly join 97' to the new abnormal spike and highlight just how steep the warming slope suddenly is since 97'? Surely they cannot cry foul about folk taking an outlier temp and using it to show how temps are behaving??

Were a new (Super?) Nino not such a serious business in our world today it would be quite a fun summer watching the Deniers and their antics! As it is the prospect of record global temps in our low Arctic ice world is not in any way funny or worthy of street dancing!
