Thank you for keeping the thread on topic.I notice a big jump in snow cover from 27th to 29th. Would you say this is well above average?

It's well below the average for the 2000s even and a long way below the longer term average. However, there's a school of thought that it can make conditions more conducive for colder, snowier winters in Northern Europe.

Yes this post further up had the anomaly to a few days ago and I suspect its become bigger since the end of that graph a few days ago.

I think that's the ice you are referring to I think the snowcover is well above average.

Oops yes. Ice is still way down, but that is possibly a good thing in terms of winter prospects (although perhaps not so good generally!). Snowcover is well up, and let's hope it continues through October and November.

Ice extent us the highest its been for a number of years at this point in the season.

Snow cover is well above average.

SSTs are 4 degrees above avg in the north west atlantic so im not sure how that will affect things for ice formation and weather patterns in the winter. Good for convection i guess.

Long term average, ice is way below par. The links i post demonstrate this in a neat chart.

Snow in Longyearben this morning, the mountains on the far side are obscured by mist but the snowline from yesterday has definitely progressed downwards it would appear -

Well there "should" be snow there by now, temperatures there have been markedly above average for a long time, probably related to Arctic ice retreat on the Atlantic side - http://www.yr.no/place/Norway/Svalbard/Longyearbyen/statistics.html

The past 14 months have all been warmer than average with the mean monthly temperature of -2.1°C being 3.2 degrees above the normal -5.3°C over this period.

Well maybe its all about the gains this month not what should and shouldn't be there.

Maybe Longyearbyen's snow has actually no bearing on our weather whatsoever!

edit: Expanding the point a little, clearly if people are looking ahead for trends then what should/shouldn't be there is a crude definition of anomaly so is important.

Rather big gain. If we can keep seeing similar gains, it certainly bodes well :)

you can see all the figures on here

http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/seaice/extent/plot_v2.csv,
