I have noticed a lot of clouds recently that look very similar to steam towers that come out of industry chimneys or clouds that are almost vertical without them being of a Cu/CB type look.

Is this shaping caused by updrafts and at this time of year what do these clouds mean?

Hi Lauren. I have also seen these clouds recently and the best explanation I have seen so far is that they are dissipating/decaying Cumulus and Cumulonimbus clouds. That makes sense given that they seem to have been spotted later in the day, following convective weather. The energy in the atmosphere was no longer stong enough to support the parent clouds, so they gradually shrank down in size, but still retained a weak tower shape. Hope that makes sense.

A frost looks likely out here in the suburbs tonight as the mercury has now dipped to 1.1c. Electric blanket and heating on and it's not even winter yet. Posted Image

until this drops i see the jet staying as it is for now

solar

http://www.solarham.net/regions/map.htm

http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/alerts/warnings_timeline.html

as you can see it is spaced out with high activity then low then high

the ensembles show this

ecm temps

Posted Image

wind

Posted Image

rain

Posted Image

notice the ensembles all over the shop at present

so i think we will see similar to what we have now but cooling off over the next 10 days

expect the odd warmer day as well but also dry conditions setting in

keep watching to the north and east of us to see the building blocks for winter setting in

i would worry about solar output if we see this in the next couple of months but not now

the solar link i have followed for a while and is my opinion only

i will of course still post the odd ramp chart Posted Image

Mildenhall's hit zero with a 5mph wind. Sure feels like it here too. I lit the bedroom fire tonight.

Wasn't birds of any kind - defiantly cloud/vapour of some sort and no chimneys nearby either - I've noticed it a couple of times recently always early in the morning!

Looks like a aircraft contrail dispersing to me?

Morning All. A wet and damp note here, sporadic rain through the early hours, the rainband seems to have weakened as it has travelled further E/SE. Temperature upto 7.7c now. Wind 18mph S.

Morning all, damp and cold here this morning. Looking at FI, maybe things could be turning a little more seasonal for a spell....that would be nice...

seems a little insensitive discussing our silly little world after Haiyan - heres hoping for a swift recovery for all.

strongest recorded so far, is it a hint of more records to come around the world or a nasty blip? Imagine that here, one nasty winter storm...

anyway, back to a quiet autumn/ winter here.

maybe.

Temp 10c winds gusting at 43, where's that wind coming from.

Your right

legrandefromage

what happened in the Philippines was horrible, our weather is thankfully insignificant. I hope the people can recover from this.

Morning All,

What a difference a day makes - yesterday was such a lovely sunny Autumn day.  Today is horrible - dull, wet and depressing.

Morning all - there was frost on the car at bedtime but this morning it's just wet, I'm pleased to be working today so I don't have to be outside in it and tonight we will be grateful to have cottage pie for supper and a warm bed to sleep in - our thoughts are very much with the people in the Phillippines who are suffering such hardship, we really shouldn't moan about a soggy miserable Monday morning when we have so much to be thankful for !

Could that be what I saw on Friday morning then ?Posted Imageimage.jpg...I assumed it was a vapour trail !

Looked similiar to this but definately not a contrail. I wish I'd taken a photo now!

Good morning all. The weather about sums up my sombre mood this morning, it's dull and wet. The temperature just briefly managed to slip below zero here last night for the first time this Autumn......-0.1c at 1am but slowly rising after that.

My thoughts today are with those poor souls in The Philippines, and with those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during conflict. May they all R.I.P.

Interesting developments over in the mod threads, looking at a cold blast from the north coming next week.

Everything is starting to get interesting!

Yes the swear filter does make you laugh at times. I think for a joke it would be great to add in Rain for Snow and Mild for Cold and see how long it takes before someone noticesPosted Image
