^^^ I reckon they're steam towers. from vigorous fires in chimneys, recently lit. Posted Image

Actually slightly intrigued. Posted Image I'm wondering how they can be vertically developed without looking like Cu etc. ?

I can't help, as most days I've observed are either mostly clear like today or (by far the most) completely cloudy dross.

They wouldn't be some sort of wave cloud?

I certainly haven't seen them before. If you can imagine scud cloud, but vertical, that's what it looked like. I will get a picture next time to show you what I mean. Maybe it even was scud cloud, but in a odd shape?

Drove from Lewes to Wadhurst just now, in places temperature was -0.5c (hollows generally). What a beautiful, crisp Autumn day.

Fantastic. Tonight was the evening dog walk we always wait for where we set foot outside the door, breathe in the lovely crisp air, watch as we exhale 'smoke' back into the night, touch the frost on the cars and say 'Yesss, it's our first proper winter's evening'Posted Image

Follow-up.

I really don't think they were noctilucent (night-shining) clouds, which tend to appear before/round the summer solstice an hour or so after sunset or before sunrise, and are high up in the atmosphere. They don't appear dark, at normal cloud levels during the day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noctilucent_cloud

An easy guess would be that that was a spreading out contrail. Whether that's the correct answer, who knows.

Very chilly here in Reigate, currently 1.1c with a dew point of 0.5c

A beautiful Autumn walk mid morning, just me and the hound this time, got to a high-ish point that allowed a sweeping view across lower land and then up higher to the top of the North Downs. Leaf colours were subtly aligned with altitude, the higher trees more brown and fewer leaves on show, lower down still hanging on to green, gold and abundance. Amongst all the rain, wind and wildness of recent weeks this was a day to take stock, breath out, open eyes, feel the chilled wind as it pushed gently, and allow the sun's still-insistent warmth to touch faces.

Watched Gravity in 3D on a massive Imax screen this afternoon, with the 3 children. As a consequence I am now utterly drained!

Was it worth going to the cinema for?

Hi Lottie, I'd say it would only work on a big screen and in 3D, which I'm not normally a fan of. I spent the first 10 minutes feeling the effects of vertigo and the next 80 minutes in a state of high anxiety. Which I suppose counts for a good day out! As cinematic experiences go it's up with the best, script a bit limited, but it doesn't really matter - extraordinary!Let me know what you think if you see itAS

Frost here too, and that was seven'ish ( ran out *ok walked* and put the frost thingy on the car).

Gravity looks awesome (now I sound like an 80's teenager) but I so want to go and see it.

Evening all took a nice drive down to Southampton and back today to see a few people, temperature on the way back was 3c, now im at a reading of 0.3c frost has already started to form!Quick question can the dew point temperature go above the actual temperature or is the dew point limited by the actual temperature? as the dew point is currently sitting at 0.3c with a dew point of 0c.

i dont think dew point temperature can be higher than air temps , as this would make so much moisture akin to being underwater.

Swallows?

Wasn't birds of any kind - defiantly cloud/vapour of some sort and no chimneys nearby either - I've noticed it a couple of times recently always early in the morning!post-10773-0-38639100-1384125296_thumb.j Edited by MKsnowangel

Yes I have to agree if it hadn't been for the experience of watching it in 3D sitting in D-box seats I wouldn't have bothered but they made it feel like you were up there in space and surprisingly I didn't feel nauseous - if you want a better film for D box seats go see RUSH you really feel like your in the F1 car or for some really good acting I'd recommend Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks at his best) And just to keep 'on topic' it's cold here tonight :-) Edited by MKsnowangel
