little bit of hope today from the models from a cold point of view with some possible routes to snow showing and I still think later this month we will get another shot at getting something decent.

although we haven't had what we want its still good to see the ski centres still managing to get open with snow on the hills which is the main thing for winter to keep them in business

GEFS 6z thrown in some good cold runs but its the 6z so cant be taken serious just now till we see more runs like this but it does throw some really decent charts in there with a few stonkers

hopefully we can see this continue in future runs but as we know the GEFS 6z can have a mind of its own sometimes but one to watch

Perhaps this is the ultimate comment on this Winter so far - Mrs HS tells me that the bird seed she has hanging out in copious quantities has gone mouldy, the birds are no longer needing it! Go figure. Posted Image

Cos it's so mild in Scandy, we've not got loads of illegal immigrants stealing your food. Or filling up the vets' surgeries, claiming nesting benefits or overcrowding avian kindergartens.

Latest Met Office figures confirm that 'winter'* continues to be mild and dreich.

http://metofficenews.wordpress.com/2014/01/16/mild-wet-winter-continues-in-early-january-figures/

Though not quite as mild for us Kilters as elsewhere.

Good to see that the ski centres are doing well, anyway. Posted Image

I suppose it's somewhat comforting to see that the latest situation (chartwise) still cannot  identify a winner between mild or cold? It makes me so jealous that the USA forecasters have stated for what seems like days now that another, probably worse cold spell, is due to begin there sometime next week and will probably last for between 12-20 days.  They appear to be so confident in the forecast that they are already preparing.  Spot the difference!Posted Image   I know that, like Europe, it's a large landmass without the sea interference, but wouldn't it be great to know with some certainty what was coming. Anyway, I was hoping for an answer to something that is in the back of my mind.......We all, more so westerners and southerners, remember the seemingly endless storminess that invaded our shores a few weeks back, indeed many are still suffering. If, as has been stated, that it was due to the extreme cold in the USA firing up the jet over the warmth of the Atlantic carrying these storms, then are we due for a repeat performance because of more extreme cold in the USA?

I can't post the charts I have saved, but the 12z ECM has blown the lid on HLB. It's strapped a thermonuclear device to the lid and used a hammer to detonate it.

Lovely, isn't it! Sorry! last chart should have been in first place. (192 850s)

The short answer is yes. The last ECM12z chart shows the Altantic breaking through. The GFS12z becomes zonal with deep lows and stormy weather before the Azores high moves north in FI and it becomes very mild and yuk!

The thing is though all we need once the jet does power up is a bit of amplification upstream - with the models picking up on an Arctic high for the first time it wouldn't take much for our Azores high to ridge northwards into Greenland with the troughing shifting from Canada to Scandinavia and bringing in some sustained cold. The PV is so disrupted at this point that I seriously doubt we could see a return to full on zonality, whether or not we get lucky with the remnant vortex positioning is a different issue though:

Posted Image

We also have the advantage of having a euro trough in place - this will draw the jet SE and encourage the undercut so if/when the jet does power up our block is less likely to be a 'sinker'

Posted Image

Some fine potential tonight, fraught with risk as ever but it does look as though the bigger picture might be about to fall into place for really the first time this winter.

Maybe they've taken over the models all winter as well!
