Miserable morning temps hovering close to 5 degrees with sleet at times in cold heavy rain. Thankfully we don't have any strong winds, otherwise it would be making for a very miserable morning.

Things should clear out early afternoon with sunny spells forecast later on under clear skies, so in a few hours I suspect memories of this morning will be quickly erased. A cold night in prospect, temps down close to freezing in many spots.

Wow, pretty wintry scene there!

This weekend has been really quite remarkable. Friday 19c, yesterday 10c, today just before the rain cleared the temperature was 5c and there was definitely sleet mixed in with the rain. Sun out now ...

April is our most fickle month, notorious from being like winter then summer in the space of 24 hours. Key reason why we see such wild fluctuations in short space of time is the difference in temps to our north and south being at there greatest now. The arctic has only just reached its coldest phase of the year, and SST's around our shores also only just starting to recover, whereas the continent under an increasingly strong sun is quickly warming.

The past 48 hours haven't been classic switcharound conditions i.e. when a southerly is replaced by a northerly or vice versa, but a strong reminder of the UK's position at the margins of competing weather systems and airmasses. That line on occasion can straddle the centre of the UK as it is right now.

Personally I've found the passage of weather between Friday and today quite interesting and enjoyable.

Yes it would have been great had Friday been a precursor to an almost summer-like weekend, but by the same token to experience the marked difference in airmass and weather types in the space of 3 days has been worthy of note in my opinion.

Had some pretty heavy rain here today too (before the sleet arrived briefly) and it's been a little while since we had such heavy rain here.

I forgot to say, on Tuesday we had sleet mixed in with the heavier showers and the car thermometer was reading 5c at 17:30ish.

Pretty damn cold it was and very wintry feeling in the raw wind.

There is still a noticeable chill in the air for May.

By and large a pretty decent day here today, with some pleasant sunshine and copious amounts of blue sky to be seen.

Some decent sized hail here today around 1pm. Everything turned white, high of 9.9 here today feels like March out there.

My station has a high of 23.1c for today (the thermostat is in the shade so isn't affected by the afternoon sunshine)

If this is correct its the highest temp of the year so far in Darlington

High of 14c here today, the wind coming of the the north sea is to blame for that. Nice is the sun feels cold in the shade

Less than 10 miles away we touched 19C but still can't quite make 20 this year!
Stiff breeze from SE this afternoon so it did not feel especially warm
