I would love to see something maybe where perhaps christmas doesn't need to be white (for snow) but I do remember about the time of year christmas in the past was sometimes cold with frost or really dense fog (freezing fog) something like that wouldn't be too shabby

I agree, even freezing fog all day would be a nice touch for Xmas day itself.

agree with you NUT. Snow would be the true cherry but just a true wintry day for Christmas would be good.  :good:

Dear Santa, I have been pretty well behaved this week so please can I have either cold/ frosty and bright or white with snow, you know that bright still quiet whiteness that lights up your bedroom in the morning and you just know it's been snowing!!!

Anything but mild dampness please, that's for folk on the naughty list.

That's that organised...now what's next?

Woo the snow is fairly coming down here as well right now and covering everything nicely. I know it won't last but I'm loving having the chance to watch everything get covered! :)

Ain't gonna last Golden Jacket, it's turned sleety here already despite the temp having dropped slightly to 1.0C. Damn those warm uppers!

The last foggy Christmas Day I can recall was in Glasgow in 2005 (I think).

Something (anything!) other than mild mush does make the day itself a bit more special, be it snow, frost, fog or even just a bright and chilly Crimbo.

Just make it something seasonal please, Santa. Otherwise...

Chucking it down here too now and the covering of snow is already looking very slumped and sad. Temp 1.7C so it's still cold rain.

At last!

It's actually snowing outside and we have a light covering, my first sight of falling and lying snow this winter. At 6pm here it was down to -1.0C but started climbing slowly soon afterwards. Its currently sat at 1.2C so we've benefitted from the incoming band of precipitation hitting the colder air. Pity it'll all be gone by morning, or by the time I go to bed even.

In the meantime I'm going to enjoy the lampost watching.

Glad you finally got to see some snow! Just rain here so the (very patient) wait goes on...

Rain here too, feels somehow like we've had our snow event for the year in central - bummer!

The 18z GFS(P) delivers cold uppers for Xmas Day, almost certainly not snowy but definitely properly seasonal:

post-2844-0-10895700-1418789715_thumb.pn

This from a very seasonal run, it'll be interesting to see what the other runs spit out this morning, but thankfully it's not looking ultra-mild.

Edit: GFS(Parallel) 00z is looking cold with snow for many on Xmas Day. ECM 00z looks cold for Xmas day with a few sleet or snow showers. Bog standard GFS 00z is looking cold for Xmas Day with snow for the north and possibly other areas. I think we might have a theme going down...

Morning all,

Mild but mostly clear this morning, 6c.

As Catch says models starting to converge on a possible cold spell beginning around the 25th. No point in getting hung up on the details at this range, what we need to see is cross-model agreement at a more reliable range. If the models are still showing -10c 850s and 514 dam for Leuchars at +120 hours I'll be getting excited about the rare prospect of snow in the East Neuk!

Some superb output this morning zoning in on a route to cold.

GFS parallel taking the lead again with ECM dragging itself into the Xmas and New Year party. Along with the will it or won't it for Xmas day we have a good model head to head as a sub plot.

Hopefully the trend to cold and more blocked solutions continues to gather impetus.

I'm still waiting on my first lying snow here, plenty further up on the hills but hee haw at my level. Those charts look brill but I'm refusing to build up my hopes even for a few flakes. Cold and frosty would be lovely ( and lets face it, more likely here! ), but a wee dusting would be cool. Literally. Meantime it's cloudy and drizzly here, temp 7c. Cooler tomorrow I believe...and hope!

The ECM GFS Day 8-10 Mean 500mb charts have been edging towards this for several days now, we have a definite change in the chart, the focus of higher 500mb heights moving steadily towards Greenland which should in turn allow proper surface high pressure to develop in this area.

Typically, I haven't saved the chart for several days, but I've posted up older charts so you can see the changes. This hasn't jumped in one step, it has been a series of small steps moving the focus towards Greenland, so I'm inclined to believe it's a proper change and not chart chopping from run to run:

All in all, it's very positive output this morning. Defo time to dust off the ramps :good:

Didn't bother checking the overnight low (or high as it may have been) on the weather station but it was 6.7C at around 8:30am. Given that, and the rain, surprisingly there were still remnants of last night's snow in amongst the grass and the gutters of the roads, so the ground is probably still pretty cold even if the air isn't.

A bright start to the day to compensate for the mildness, but that also meant I was driving straight into a blindingly bright low sun on the way to work at times.

Looks like things may be going to plan for between Xmas & New Year i.e. I'll be up a virtually snowless mountain in France reading about you all being buried in snow in Scotland. :fool:

Someone's got to take the bullet for the team, thanks Ravelin :D

Nah, I genuinely wish loads of snow on everyone, we could do with wall to wall snow porn for a few weeks over this winter.

ECM surface T ensembles for London showing the potential cool down.

Synoptics mean the further north the colder...

Standard GFS 06z points to cold at the very least for Xmas Day, snow for some. Sod it, let's start a full scale "It's Going to be a White Xmas" rampede :D

Edit: Parallel GFS 06z also sticks with a winter theme. What can possibly go wrong?
