We had a flurry but it didn't lie and it only made the floor wet for the rest of the evening...not expecting anything other than on the hills to lie guys.

So going by past events this winter, it's around this time of night during potential snowfall (8pm - 10pm) that things start to go wrong. Now, this time, we started with very low expectations anyway and they are somewhat being met. So hopefully this time, even if it does rain or doesn't snow or whatever it does, all will remain calm!

Apparently the uppers at the moment are -7, if that's the case why is the temperature still above freezing? We had a snow shower earlier so the uppers are obviously OK as are dps, just the damn temperature refuses to drop yet again. Dry and clear now and still 3C. Any snow won't stick in that unless it's really heavy and does the evap cooling thing.

This "polar maritime" air is nearly always junk below 300m. It either gives temps that won't drop below 1 or 2C despite cold uppers and low dps, or it gives rain at temperatures of 1 or 2C. Once in a blue moon it produces a temporary cover (14th Jan), but only like 1 in 10 occurrences does that. High ground. Always bloody high ground with this PM stuff. If it likes mountains so much why doesn't it eff off to Nepal or somewhere, they're much higher than the Pennines!

Well the lastest band has arrived here as snow.

I have a dream that one day, we will get as late as 10:30pm and it will still be snowing!

Not raining.

Not being cloudy and nothing.

Actual snow.

-7 uppers not really enough off this airstream, needs to be -10, off continental air though, or battleground/frontal snow, uppers can be as high as -3C

Snow getting fairly heavy here too now. Big flakes and settling.

Edit: Calmed down as quick as it had pepped up. Shows how quick things are moving.

The odd flurry here but refusing to fall below 3c, a common occurrence in recent winters.

Sod's law Sunday's forecast to be clear and sunny once the upper's and wind direction is ideal.

Good to hear some of getting snow, but be warned, there seems to be a bit of non-snow on the radar tonight.   Currently experiencing my 2nd case ....  (snow on the radar, broken clouds and moonlight in reality)

Problem is that even though they look good on the radar, they are moving at such a pace they haven't got any time to leave much behind. You really want to get under a streamer. This could well be the reason why we are out of the warning area. We can get the heavy snow...just not enough of it in any one spot!

Still nice to see falling and create quick dustings.

Yes why do we get these ridiculous lapse rates with PM air that make 300m altitude so significant? -7 at 850mb and +3 at 100m is about 9C/km. I thought it was normally around 6C/km, with only fohn setups giving 9 or 10C. -7 is usually OK in Arctic Maritime, despite the sea track.

You only have to look at the radar and see the showers they are getting, further North, to

realise why they are under a warning and we are not in most parts of the

Midlands.

I would say nothing more than a very light dusting for most tonight, now

The showers we are getting are nowhere near as good, or intense, as those

further North.

A real shame but that is the luck for a lot of the Midlands so far this winter.
