Where are people suddenly getting this polar low snow event from? It's VERY likely to be sleet/rain for 90% of us below 200m > don't get your hopes up unless you leave on a hill is my advice...on another note...if it does come down as snow, would this be perfect?

The black splodge is my house!

Looks like were in the dry gap for this 'polar low' anyway.

Well of course we are while it's still over 400 miles away!

Let's see when it gets a bit closer!

Today has been another non event for this part of Derbyshire, the snow sheild may have malfunctioned in that theres been falling snow, but its not fallen for landg, and what has has soon vanished when it hit the wet ground.

Anyway, incoming small band of snow right now. Currently crossing Shropshire into Staffordshire and holding. Not as impressive as earlier but a bit of lampost watch practise to come within the next hour.

I am not sure if I am being biased here but the polar low ( or whatever else we want to call it) clearly looks to be heading a bit further east than the bbc are suggesting matching the gfs projections.

Perhaps I am not looking at it correctly or with rose tinted glasses!

Bullseye.....attachicon.gifPL.png

Is that your desired track or something a bit more 'official'?

I think this Polar Low thing is being blown way out of proportion.

I don't see it doing much at all. By the time it reaches the Midlands. It'll probably end up being a band of moderate rain/sleet for lower levels.

People mentioning feet of snow in the Polar Low thread is just absurd to be honest.

Who knows? The whole thing could fizzle out. Fickle things by all acount.

The last polar low I remember seeing was when I lived in Sunderland. It was around January/February 2004 (and no, it wasn't the thundersnow event). Very intense snowfall indeed. Of course being that much further north was a huge advantage! Saw a lot of incredible snow while I lived there. The best I've ever seen up there...and I've lived in Ohio as well!

Polar low or no Polar low, looks like we're going to have some showers to entertain us this evening.

It depends which model has this correct. GFS 12z has it affecting the NW then E Midlands in the firing line. However Met Office has it much further west of us and the NMM 06z has it over the S and W Midlands. ECM apparently has it further west too, affecting just Wales and the SW as rain.

Well the ECM is def wrong, however not sure which of the NMM or GFS has it right, if I was going to stick my neck out I'd say GFS

That Shefali (BBC midlands weather) just advised the region that the snow would 'fizzle out to nothing' on BBC WM.  She mentioned a 'feature' but said that at this stage 'we're going for dry'.

hmm.

Yh true polar low would be the cherry on the cake if it happened. But if not looks like streamers are forming through the gap so plenty of showers about.

That is the great thing about them you just don't know what you are going to get, albeit a true polar low has a very cold core and therefore invariably will be snow

Look at the satelite images you can clearly see the eye even the experts agree its a polar low. The question is how far south will it get
