few flakes coming down again, coming in from cheshire gap, maybe streamer setting up

a little bit gordon, had a covering around 7am, then again from showers between 3-5pm, very heavy one at 4.30

Interesting. Just heard there's nothing on the ground at all in some parts of Wolverhampton. Could see the showers tracking further north towards Stafford so they must have been your ones. All shows just what a lottery it is when showers are set up like this.

that is so correct it's unreal, Its not a polar low, its just a band of ppn moving down, rain at low levels

see post 1182 could not be a clearer small low pressure system

not a polar low though, polar low is snow only, and comes down in a true arctic flow,

No way we can know yet its still to far away no warnings from the met so dont think they belive this will amount to much

Uppers will be crucial

There are yellow warnings from Met Office for high winds in SW and midlands and south all connected with this feature .... could be a long and hopefully snowy night  woohoo

The NMM looks good PPN wise for tonight - looks intense over Derby/Leicester etc. Much dry further west between more activity over Wales. Expecting a dry and frosty night in South Staffs. Would expect to see it that way for areas South and West of here too. Brum, Walsall, Shropshire etc. Cold and dry.

ILTS

The Met Office have said it IS a Polar Low. ( confirmed by IF).

It has developed its own ciculation and is deepening rapidly. I do not know where you got the idea of a a band of ppn from?

Look at the radar charts.

The low formed in coldish air off the west coast of Norway sweeping southwards along a trough line.

It was not forcast, but they are always possible in a cold northerly flow, with resonably warm SST's.

.

Now

Polar lows do fizzle out very quickly so we may not get much down here. However no one knows yet what it is going to do.

It looks to me as though its headed straight for us, or maybe if it deepens, further down over the north west of england and down thru the east Midlands. We will see.

However there is another similar looking feature whih is forecasted to come down from Iceland on monday night into Tuesday. This is not a Polar Low as its origins were in the north west Atlantic, between Greenland and Iceland  and will have picked up some warmer Atlantic air in it circulation. As such it will move down as a normal depression. Will the air ahead of it be cold enough for snow.?

MET OFFICE Chief Forecaster's assessment, A small area of low pressure is expected to move southeastwards and bring a more persistent spell of rain, sleet and snow to parts of western Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Midlands. This likely to lead to further accumulations of snow, especially on high ground, whilst also increasing the risk of ice.

The track of this system is a little uncertain at present and this warning may be adjusted as and when necessary.

Interesting radar watching tonight :)

Judging by the current track on live radar...(Forget forecasts you saw an hour ago)

I have attatched a very rough outline as to where it's heading.

1) The western extent.

2) The thicker line is it's current track based on the radar in the last hour.

3) That's the northern/eastern track.

Here is the NMM.

nmmuk-1-11-0.png?29-18

nmmuk-1-13-0.png?29-18

From Nick L, a met man in the Polar Low thread.

'Latest ECM has a spell of heavy snowfall for the East Midlands and parts of northern England, very similar to what the new NMM shows'

Anyone away from Derby/Leicester maybe north Stoke southwards should pray for snow...but expect it to be mostly dry this eve. It's an East Midlands/Northern England event at the moment, if that changes - I'll update my post.

Cheers!
