It's still looking good for the NW from this evening onwards and I expect many places to wake up to a covering of snow by the morning, regardless of our resident Yorkie telling us all otherwise.

It's surprising there's been proper snow in Manchester - just a few snow pellets in among the hail here. The clouds look wintry though.

Heavy snow falling for 10 or so minutes at times, but not laying. Still, encouraging for later on this evening/tonight and tomorrow.

how much do you think we shall be expecting tonight

Really, its diffucult to say. Showers are not easy to predict at the best of times and where snow is involved its even tougher.  What i would say is you are far enough inland (in view of the fact its already been snowing near the coast) for any showers that reach you to be of snow, and potentially this will leave a covering overnight.

Hi,

Well I'm more confident now of even seeing some temporary accumulations even on the coast, after the initial rain this morning, followed quickly by hail/sleet showers, we then had a few light snow showers that whistled through.

Showers really starting to rattle in now from the west, most places will see some snow by the morning now I feel even on the coast, that wind out there is bitter!

Yep Ian.  Looking at that one over Fleetwood heading straight for Preston.

Wife has just texted, gritters are out on the roads in Preston already.

To be honest, I wouldn't call it "proper" - We have had "some" snow, but not a lot, until later on anyways.

I got the impression the city centre was having lots of interesting weather like huge gusts this morning whereas this street only had one bin blown over even though it's bin day

Also to add the cold spell now is showing signs of prolonging and further snow is expected.

As I was saying the setup is pretty rare and the flow is an unstable one hence more surprises may crop up.

For example this from the Met for Sunday:

Periods of enhanced snowfall are possible within this general flow but details of these are very uncertain at this time.As such this alert is likely to be updated and refined in the coming days to better represent individual features.

The last frame of the ECM indicating MAYBE a prolongling of the scold spell.

Yes, nice to keep an eye on that, looks more like a Manchester Streamer in this flow tbh - albeit it's not really a streamer yet, but time will tell.

Hopefully it is & develops through the night and could give *significant* snow, to low levels of course.

Got 5 days of this yet to come so i'm optimistic, already had heavy hail showers and fleeting snow passing on through. GFS doesn't really get the bulk of the accumulation going until 6am tomorrow at best, so this is just a taster of what's expected to come.
