Hopefully any colder weather will bring some sunshine. We haven't had a single minute of it this month yet and only 68hrs since 15th November. With the damp and rain its absolutely miserable.

That sounds pretty bad.. we were like that for much of November and December.

Since the jetstream has moved south a bit at the end of December, it's been wetter here but I much prefer it with a bit more sun in-between (and possibly no more 'wet' hours than was spent with drizzle or patchy light rain before).

Interesting news for Feb..

With the ensemble AO mean forecast to drop below -5 that has only been hit in 5 other winters since 1950. Here is what we saw the following Feb (all had -1> Feb AO values)..

All of those Februarys had low pressure tracking further south than usual, but while 1963, 1985 and 2010 had us mostly on the cold side of the jet stream, February 1977 had us underneath it, resulting in a very wet month.  February 1966 saw a north-south split- cold and snowy in the north but very mild and wet in the south.

Here's a forecast from February 1977, I think it's the 11th

What a differance this winter is compared to last winter regarding sunshine. I have hardly seen the sun since It set on friday evening,  in what has been a very cloudy and dull winter overall so far. Last winter saw plenty of sunshine and was even record breaking for some on that score. This winter the exact opposite.

Yes it has been very dull indeed. Here, last winter saw 287 hours of sunshine (December and January were both the sunniest on record with 91 hours each, plus 105hrs in February). So far this winter we've seen 68 hours.

Out of 50 days so far this winter, only 15 have seen an hour of sunshine or more. Coupled with the lack of snow (none lying at 0900 yet), persistent wet days (41 out of 50 days have seen precipitation), lack of frosts (just 4 so far with a lowest of -2.0C), it really has been grim.

It really has been grim here. Today was remarkable simply for being the first completely dry day of the winter so far and we're over half way through!  If tomorrow is also dry, as expected, it will be the first time we've had two consecutive dry days since Nov 2nd.  It was nice to see the sun again today also - been very dull recently.

Since late October it has been exceptionally dull here, on the few occasions we've been promised a sunny day its been snatched away. Last weekend a good case in point, we had cloud by lunchtime Sat and no sun thereafter. Now we have a weather front draped over us under a high pressure - making for 2 further sunless miserable days. Its been woeful, awful for SAD sufferers. Typically sunshine levels do increase markedly as February arrives, and drier airstreams become more abundant.

The persistant tropical maritime air has been the reason for the lack of sunshine.

We've a good 6 weeks left still of winter 15/16 and I'm hopeful of much more sunshine in the weeks ahead, although the immediate outlook looks grim with yet again horrible mild murky grey skies thanks to tropical maritime air - SW airstreams are terrible for sunshine here in the Lakes, even in the height of summer we end up with low cloud , no views. I really detest them..

Must be very frustrating for you when you hear talk of "improving weather", in reality meaning changes to anticyclonic/tropical maritime regimes and dry and warm (and, in the summer half-year, often sunny) weather for the majority of the country, but grey drizzly conditions in the Lake District.

It's hard for me to imagine how wet it's been in Cumbria in the last couple of months.
