Still mainly overcast here sadly but some signs of rapid convection, something nasty building towards NW London, proper cauliflower clouds with defined edges. Some places will get lucky later!

Remember some peoples version of 'lucky' is different.

My 'lucky' would have been "sunshine" without cloud rolling in.... Not a isolated shower that may deliver a rumble of thunder.

Praying that tomorrow delivers a sunnier day before back to work on Monday!!!

Glad those poxy pulse storms are further north all that cloud and rain for a few flashes not worth it imo..

High cloud looks to be clearing slowly to leave prehaps a few brighter spells this evening in time for firing up the BBQ

Tomorrow hopefully brings a sunnier day, although today has not been bad at all!

Love the fact those showers are passing well west of here.. Bugger off I say and let the sunshine come back!

BBQ arranged this evening with a few friends and don't want it ruined.

Shame about all the cloud today, really annoying, sign of the times? These synoptics would have given clear skies in years gone by. Sun coming out again so hopefully a very pleasant evening in store for a BBQ supper :) Fingers crossed tomorrow is much sunnier.

It was very warm earlier on with the strong sun beating down waking through the ecology park as you do catching some rays, still humid a nice relieving breeze countering it :)

it has been lovely in Hunstanton. Just a little fair weather cloud, it has turned very warm since the sea breeze dropped out and shifted to the south east.

LOL. How would these synoptics give clear skies in years gone by? Clouded over here and a stiff breeze. The Mrs is complaining she's cold

A SE'ly wind usually meant clear skies unless a front was very close by. Would be interested to know why so much high cloud developed today. Looking at satellite pics tomorrow doesn't look promising either, masses of cloud over France moving this way. Seems difficult to get clear skies even for one day!

Had a nice sunny day here for the most part, had a mix of altocumulus, cas and ac cas all day, with also some wisps of dying cloud. Went to folkestone for a bit, and it was cloudy but warm.

I know right...and with cloud you can forget thunderstorms and replace it with moderate/heavy showers or longer spells of rain.

Reading through the storm thread - I have to give it to those guys.. Hoping and wishing for a thunderstorm that will probably give them 2 rumbles of thunder, if that.. How exhausting!!!

Don't get me wrong I love a good storm but only if its going to be a BOOMER... With the freezing Spring and Wet winter - Any storms/rain can stay well away for now as far as im concerned.

Think it is fair to say some pretty big storms have occurred over this way today! Definitely not just a couple of rumbles. Could to be fair have ended up that way though! lol. We had the very warm sunshine too albeit more hazy and the energy and forcing was there. Good call by the models today to be fair. :) Marble sized hail and constant rumbles and very frequent lightning all reported locally. :)

However, looks like very warm sunshine for all tomorrow. Enjoy. :D

Yes some areas have had more than 2 rumbles but a very isolated affair nonetheless.

My version of 'big storms' is probably different to yours. After living in Canada for 2 years (Montreal) the storms there make the majority of thundery cells in the UK look benign believe me.

Vicious electrical storms containing golf ball hail with thunder that's deafening and lightning that lights the sky continuous for hours, producing rain to flood you out within 5 minutes - that's a big storm.

Hehe yes I admit those are most definitely big storms!

To be fair, pretty widespread storms for the West Midlands region and parts of the E Mids and M4 Corridor areas today. Some very frequent lightning in some. So not a bad result at all. Looking forward to the warm sunshine tomorrow now. :)

Me too, really hope the cloud cover doesn't repeat itself over London and the Home Counties again. Felt hot in the sun this morning before the dreaded cloud took over.

Nice start to the day here, some cloud floating about but plenty of blue sky visible, hopefully much less cloud than yesterday.

Not sure if this is relevant to what you were saying stainesbloke, but the amount of (high level?) cloud & lack of totally clear sky nowadays has been studied by the scientific community. There seems to be plenty of findings that suggests the increase in aircraft contrails are causing more high level cloud. And it appears to be very relevant to our Region because of the amount of aircraft movements over us.

Scientists now admit that emissions from aircraft are forming artificial clouds that block out the sun....  Reading University’s Professor Keith Shine, an expert in clouds, said that those formed by aircraft fumes could linger ‘for hours’, depriving those areas under busy flight paths, such as London and the Home Counties, of summer sunshine. Experts have warned that, as a result, the amount of sunlight hitting the ground could be reduced by as much as ten per cent. Over the busiest areas in London and the South of England, this high-level cloud could cover the sky, turning bright sunshine into hazy conditions for the entire area.

If you click through the 7 satellite images on this BBC webpage "How aircraft contrails form clouds", you can see an example that happened on that particular day. It looks like the military performed some airobatics (circles) out in the North Sea that resulted in cloud for the west of our Region later that day: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8309629.stm

And even remote parts of the planet are impacted. This report on the impact in Alaska: http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs007040170045#page-1

Anyway.... sorry about all that boring serious stuff.... beautiful day out there. I've invited the neighbours around for a bbq later. Just hoping the breeze doesn't get up and blow smoke and ash everywhere!!
