The signal from the models for rain in Iberia is very welcome, the drought is very serious, the Spanish government yesterday issued a 2.2 billion euro package to help affected parties including farmers who's livelihoods are are under great strain.

Well it looks like Spain/Iberia will be the talking point of cold wet records in the coming week or two. Perhaps unprecedented in living memory?

Much needed i feel for those living there, if forecasts come to fruition. May change things for the UK in terms of very hot temperatures from plumes in the early summer if Spain isn't as scorched and dry as we first thought it would be.

If it happens it's going to help but given they've had a drought for ages it might not put a big dent in it, it'll just run off the ground in some areas and then dry up as soon as the very strong sun comes out, they need a really wet Winter with southerly tracking lows. I have a friend who owns an olive grove near Jaén and he's been worried about the future really as the trees were suffering last year. He sends me his Picual olive oil, the real deal, not the poor quality stuff on the UK supermarket shelves. The trees do like sun and heat but they also need rain at some points in the year. So hopefully they will get a good watering next week. Plenty of time for heat in actual summer.

Overpopulation???? Are you serious?

Spain density: 94 people per km2

UK density: 281 people per km2

If there's a country that's is ridiculously overpopulated this country is the UK, not Spain...

Whereas nobody ever visits the UK...

The average number of visitors in Spain is 4 million per month, less than 10% of their population. Even taking that into consideration the numbers don't change much.

UK is around 3 times more densely populated than Spain.

I don't understand why nowadays when people make a mistake, which happens to everyone, they don't just admit it and move on rather than standing up by something that's clearly wrong...

Youre obviously a person who cannot get his head around other peoples thoughts. Spain is a semi arid place in most part, and before the hoards of population decided to go there it had little impact on the environment , but because it is a fragile place and since the advent of commercial flying and easy access to millions of holiday makers building thousands of holiday resorts ,resulting in huge impacts on the environment ,this is the point im making ,that a hundred years ago there was not a demand on the infrastructure that there is today.......end of..!

That's very different than simply saying that the problem of Spain is overpopulation like you did in your first message.

Anyway enough of this, people have reached their own conclusions

Well, our 2 weeks in glorious Fuerteventura comes to an end tomorrow. It's been beautiful with mostly clear skies, mid-afters temps have ranged from 23c to a high of 27c on a few days.

Been quite windy though, which is fairly standard for here.

AEMET (Spanish meto) forecast showers today, with isolated thunderstorms, but nothing materialised, although it clouded over by midday. However, by 2.00pm the cloud started to clear and by 2.30pm we were back to clear skies. Maybe Lanzarote 'stole' our showers or possibly the rain only affected the Western Canaries of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Adios.

Out of interest, is heavy rain forecast in Hispanola, it looks like there's a potential airmass clash in the coming days.

Was hoping to see some storms over Iberia flying back from the canaries, but didn't see that much as it was still early in the day (just before 1pm) for any potent storms to form compared to later in the afternoon and evening.

Did however see this large tower or maybe storm building in the south west of Spain next to the Portuguese border, nearly at flying level of 36000 ft.

AEMET (Spanish meto) have issued storm warning for the Canaries, for this coming mid-week. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are forecast to take the brunt of it, esp the mountainous areas.

Very interesting but also unusual set up for June as a low pressure system is forming north of there next week, around the Azores.

That could bring some highly unusual rain and south westerly winds for the Canary Isles and Madeira, before that system possibly gives the UK much warmer but also thundery conditions by next weekend.

The heat is building in iberia this week, 43.7C in south west Spain today, along with some thunderstorms in the country. Some sort of heatwave (calima) in store for the Canary Islands this week as well.

Canarias have had a heatwave in the last few days, but by tomorrow it should be gone.

Still looks to be 30C into next week. Canaries see the most intense temps, when heat flows off hot NW Africa. AEMET show any warnings, inlcuding heat over next few adys
