Is intense dry conditions a reason for the early exceptional heat? or simply due to synoptics with deep trough to the west and homegrown heat build up over the interior. Quite concerning for rest of the hot season.. if we see any southerly plumes this year they could be more potent than ever. I thought Spain has had a cold wet winter and ground conditions less conducive to early heat.

It's quite bad there this spring looking at the satellite comparison, much drier. A viral long thread by I think some farmer on twitter, (second embed) showed how bad it is on the ground, crop yields look to be almost non existent this summer.

Combination of that and the synoptic set up of the trough out west responsible for such intense early season heat.

The country is slowly turning into a desert from what I've heard. The land becoming conductive to home grown heat it would seem. It certainly seems to be warming up quicker there than anywhere else in Europe. Wouldn't be at all surprised if 50c is reached soon officially. And like you say should we get a plume from there we could be looking at further records broken here in the UK. 41 or 42c not out of the question.

I kind of knew about this area when on a driving holiday-trip with the parents down to Gibraltar and back, passing Murcia down to Granada it's noteworthy seeing how quickly the climatology along the roadside changes to semi-arid desert amongst the sandstone geology.

Same here, two weeks ago. Beautiful city.

Mornings were still pretty cool at that point, so the temp range throughout the day was quite something.

And dont you need them cool mornings its a god send ,you know even here in UK you can get  vigorous cold fronts from north west or west.. never by the time it gets to se England there's much left on it  (on average ) in Eastern Spain you can forget it ,my dads lived there for nearly thirty years and everything water wise comes from the east off the med or from south east off the med then its intense and hard to catch ,washes things away and bang boiling again, I love seeing him winter it bearable

These exceptional temps, in 3 months time, all time high records would be broken. The dryness is fuelling the fire it seems.

There are parts of SE Spain around Almeria which have a semi-arid desert climate.

It's quite worrying. Having a large desert to the south that continues to expand is also a key reason. South Spain becoming an extension of the Sahara it seems.

See edit - AEMET say 38.6C Elche 2011  is April record.  there is more cloud today across Iberia.

Simon King was talking about this on 5 Live this morning.

Lack of moisture in the ground is the key that's allowing it to get hotter.

I was down on Costa del Sol last month, the whole area was exceptionally dry for time of year, very little rainfall throughout the winter, big contrast to when I went in March last year and it was raining most days.

Sobering news and yet another reason to pull our fingers out and do something about the future… 40C could not be a novelty for too long I’m afraid

38.8C showing on the provisional list from AEMET Translation 'Ranking of maximum temperatures recorded today, April 27, at the automatic stations of #AEMET (provisional data pending validation): Maxims typical of midsummer Generalized records of maximums for a month of April (pending to be located)'

Would be a new mainland SPAIN April record.

A good example on how humanity is destroying the planet and changing the climate locally. Hopefully the project will be successful although the time period needed will make many impatient and perhaps abandon it.

Well it looks like Spain/Iberia will be the talking point of cold wet records in the coming week or two. Perhaps unprecedented in living memory?
