Good to see a greening of the Iberian peninsula following the abundance of cool wet weather down there so far this year.

Well that didn't take long to make a return. The first 40C of the year perhaps next week according to the GFS for south west Spain / Portugal. May record for those areas is the 41-42C area.

Metwatch and looking at the bigger picture, most of Europe is forecast to be unseasonably cold next week ……🥶

A bit cool yes but nothing crazy. Warmth continues for eastern Europe, and considerably so in Scandinavia. Also Atlantic looking warm so any westerlies would be warmer than usual. Seem to be getting more of a northerly - NW'ly heading into early June, hence the cooler anomalies for UK and France. Probably quite welcome for those who are fed up of consistent warmth which is breaking records with ease.

Forgot to post in here but the local records broken mainly in the south west quadrant last week. Pretty notable for May though not overly widespread.

Another warm one today with few spots likely reaching 40C. However it's set to turn cooler this weekend into next week and even into Morocco with thunderstorms a feature for the northern half of Spain.

However if it's cooler in one area, then it will almost certainly be very hot somewhere else in summer, and that is the case further east in southern Europe, with temperatures possibly heading into the mid 40s for parts of Greece, Bulgaria Romania etc, though that is something to discuss more in depth in the Greece or other related sub-forum for those countries.

Very unlikely there'll be any rain as is usually the case in the Canary Islands almost every summer unless infrequent drizzle on north facing coasts from morning low cloud. Experienced it a few times in northern fuerteventura in July 2021.

A long thread in Spanish below but essentially there looks to be much hotter Saharan air arriving in the next week to 10 days also known as a calima. That will increase temperatures for inland areas, but less so by the coast, so likely not enough for a proper heatwave just yet. Haze / dust also a feature on some days

Some rainfall in the eastern Canary islands today associated with an upper level low and some moisture higher up ejecting from the western Sahara.

Some quite potent thunderstorms in the western Sahara yesterday evening, which loooked quite explosive on satellite. The calima episode brought some reduced visibility as well. Rare but this can occasionally happen towards the end of summer / start of autumn. August 2015 was a more notable example where thunderstorms managed to develop due to more instability in the higher level of the troposphere.

Friend of mine is off to Menorca for a week from Saturday. Looks like a cut off low will drop down into southern Spain while the UK stays mostly under high pressure. Interesting to see if he sees any flooding or thunderstorms, quite a warm unstable airmass looks to pass through early next week there. Highest rainfall total looks to be over in eastern Spain currently.

The special advisory text after the peak of Tues 29th (google translate of AEMET Aviso Especial)

State Meteorological Agency AEMET    Special notice of adverse phenomena number 17/2024

Issued at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, 2024

1.-Meteorological phenomenon: Heavy rains.

2.-Geographical scope: Peninsula and Balearic Islands.

3.-Beginning of the situation: Monday the 28th.

4.-Duration: Until Thursday the 31st.

5.-Degree of probability: Very high (greater than 70%)

6.-Description of the meteorological situation:

A DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) located around the Gulf of Cádiz, will remain almost stationary for much of this week and will produce widespread rainfall in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with greater probability and intensity in areas of the southern and third thirds this peninsular, although it is difficult to specify the location of the largest accumulations due to the uncertainty in DANA's position.

Tues 29th = peak   ...       Tomorrow (30th) DANA will move slowly toward the northwest, centred around the southwestern peninsula. With this, the areas with the greatest probability of locally very strong and persistent would be western Andalusia and the Strait area; environment of the Iberian system, especially in its eastern part and in the interior of the Valencian Community, and Catalonia. It can be ruled out that they also affect other points in the northeastern quadrant of the peninsula. In a way less intense and more dispersed, the showers would spread to other areas of the interior of the peninsula, except in the extreme southeast and northwest, where they are not expected.

On Thursday, the 31st, it is most likely that DANA will continue to be located to the west of the Peninsula, so the greatest probability of precipitation is concentrated on the southern Atlantic slope. and Strait area. They are likely to be locally strong and persistent in the Strait area and western Andalusia, as well as on the southern slopes of the mountain ranges of the western peninsula, especially the Central system. It is also likely that more dispersed showers will occur around the Balearic Islands and the north of the Mediterranean slope, without ruling out that they could be punctually strong.

OUTLOOK the most probable scenario contemplates a movement towards the southeast over the weekend as it weakens, so rainfall would be losing intensity in a good part of the Peninsula. However, instability will continue in the Mediterranean area, with probable showers and storms that would affect the Balearic Islands, Community Valenciana and Catalonia during the weekend and that could be locally strong and persistent. The most likely thing is that at the end of Sunday, the precipitation will begin to lose intensity and on Monday they tend to subside definitively, as the DANA dissipates.
