Sunny Sheffield up to 9.3C +1.0C above normal. Rainfall 9.3mm 10.5% of the monthly average.

Local forecast shows it to be a lot colder than what the GFS suggests and if correct would have the average down to 8.4C by next Saturday. Still above normal. However the local forecast tends to under do the day time temperatures by a degree or two so I would say by next weekend we will be looking anything between 8.4C and 8.8C for us.

The EWP is probably around 18 mm at present, looking to add 20-25 mm to finish near 40 mm. As the scoring will be the contest final, I will hold off until around the 29th even though fairly certain the numbers I have in the updated file are more or less the final values. If something more intense develops in the northerly flow, it could reach 50 mm but that won't make any real difference to the scoring.

As to the CET, yes there are some quite cold days at times, separated by near normal readings on about a 50-50 basis. The average for the last ten days (including today just ending) should be between 5 and 6 given the range expected (2 to 8). After corrections the final value seems likely to end up in the 7.5 to 8.0 C range making for quite a suspenseful finish to the CET contest. Anything under 8.0 will create a "photo finish" I would think, anything 8.0 or higher is a done deal (for Reef).

The highest maximum (1878-2020) was 15.4 in 1906 which prevented the 15.3 of 1947 from maintaining what would otherwise have been a four-day run (20th-23rd); in recent years 15.0 in 2017 came close to those two readings.

A very dry November possibly on the cards.. not had many dry Novembers recently. Also dry and mild don't tend to go together.. seems this autumn has counter balanced the cold April-May combo.. also the wet May which is usually a dry month. A very uninteresting Autumn all round..

Almanac for 23rd November

The highest daily mean (1772-2020) was 13.3 in 1947. Before that, the record had been 12.3 in 1944 which replaced 11.8 from 1778. Since 1947 the highest daily mean was 12.4 in 1980.

The lowest daily mean (1772-2020) was -4.2 in 1858. In recent years the lowest daily mean was -2.9 in 1993.

The highest maximum (1878-2020) was 14.3 in 1947 which replaced 14.1 from 1919; in recent years 13.7 in 1994 was the highest maximum.

The highest minimum (1878-2020) was 12.3 in 1947, which replaced 11.6 from 1944; since 1947 the highest minimum on this date was 11.7 in 1980.

The lowest maximum (1878-2020) was -0.5 in 1993 which replaced 1.2 from 1936. The maximum from 1858 however was very likely lower, possibly near -1.5 ... the weather map for the date shows a rather slack flow with a weak ridge connecting east Greenland with a small high over the near continent, with distant low pressure in the Atlantic. This looks like a weak easterly flow under mostly cloudy skies and perhaps a bit of light snow, would estimate the maximum near -1.5 which makes the minimum (from mean -4.2) around -7 C. (see link to archived map below the text).

The lowest minimum (1878-2020) was -6.6 in 1983. This replaced -4.4 from 1910. 1993 had -5.1 and 1965 -4.0. (1858 likely had a reading comparable to the record if not even colder).

The wettest 23rd November (1931-2020) in the EWP data was 16.79 mm (1946) followed by 16.23 mm (1939), 14.83 mm (1984) and 14.11 mm (1954).

The wettest week ending 23rd November (17th-23rd) was 66.45 mm in 1946, then 63.46 mm in 1963, 61.69 mm in 2016, 58.78 mm in 1944, 55.78 mm in 1984, 55.54 mm in 1986, 53.49 mm in 1950 and 52.90 mm in 1970.

The least amount falling in a week ending 23rd November was 0.13 mm in 1967, then 0.84 mm in 1983, 0.85 mm in 1942, 0.94 mm in 1973, 1.15 mm in 2005 and 1.37 mm in 1955.

Sunny Sheffield down to 9C +1.0C above normal. Rainfall Unchanged.

At the moment we are 2nd warmest our records and 1st driest. Looking at the forecast it seems unlikely now that we will record the driest but certainly a  good chance of a top five finish.  5th place has 30.6mm, 1973 while top place has 17.5mm recorded in 1958. We have 9.3mm at the moment

Sunny Sheffield down to 8.8C +0.9C above normal. Rainfall unchanged at 9.3mm 10.5% of the monthly average.

Just looking at the local forecast and if came off that would bring us down to 7.7C just 0.7C above normal. Now they tend to be high so finishing point is now 7.5C to 7.9C for us. So no longer in the top ten

Rainfall looks like it may take us out of the top driest as well.

EWP slowly rising, 19 mm to 23rd and now likely 20 mm, rest of month projection from GFS suggests grid average of about 15 mm, outcome would be 35 mm. Most of what is expected will fall on Friday and Saturday so that by Monday 29th I should have a fairly close estimate to use for the scoring report, and that can be adjusted in place by edits to keep the stage clear for the CET scoring and discussions.
