An officer tried to punch through the ice as emergency workers attempted to reach the children.

Truly, the saddest of news, I really do feel for the parents.

I never understand why children take such risks to be honest, we never did as children growing up in 80's. We still had lots of fun in the cold weather, turning the playground into an ice ring (creating a giant skid patch in the ice - probably why my knees are shot!), building snowmen, having crazy snow ball fights , sledging etc.

Odd flake here, on and off. Let's hope for a surprise dusting somewhere later.

Met office (UKV) seems to have backed off any snow flurries this evening and overnight. Hope there is a few showers around for a dusting or so.

Shrewsbury does seem to miss most of the snow.

Last decent snowfall was when that streamer hit us and before that 2013 maybe. Shropshire doesn't do well with snow at all.

Places that normally get snow have missed during this spell..The slackest of winds ever..

Shrewsbury did have a massive shock to the system in december 2017 with that foot of snow..

Freezing fog most of today, sunny this morning and coldest night since feb 2021 -5.6c and a max of -1.3c..

Yes December 2017 was the one, the only one in the last 35 years where we hit the bullseye. It was beyond a shock to the system, the two best setups (a correctly aligned Cheshire Gap streamer and what I call a Bristol Channel Low*) happened one after the other. With none of the mysterious turning to sleet/rain/non sticking snow or just dying out as it reaches Shropshire which happens time after time.

As for this spell, 1 or 2cm would do to redeem it at the moment (as long as everywhere else doesnt get 20!)

*Like the Channel Low but tracks 50-100 miles further north. Tends to put us in the main precipitation area on the cold side. Rare but always look out for it in models

I'll give you that, decent event here, most snow since Dec 1995 at the time- as I've said before that was the anti-4 Feb 2012 (east limit of the lying snow in March 2006 being almost exactly the west limit in 2012).

That Sunday last November on the other hand when we had hours of cold rain in Shropshire while Cheshire, Staffs, Birmingham, E and S Mids had heavy snow at lower elevations than it was raining at in Shropshire......

Nothing on the radar but there are some very tiny snow flakes coming down here. A very thin covering on cars and on top of slush/ice.

Yup

we need it to stall and intensify by 200% then could be fun ❄️❄️🤣👍🏻

Extremely light snow grains earlier this evening, but nothing now. Also paths are like an ice rink in places.

Another ice day, here with a high of -0.6 degrees.

A seasonable spell of weather, hopefully the next cold spell will be snowier! 👍

Maxed out at -0.3c at 2pm, now at 3:45pm it’s -0.8c

my coldest day of the year so far…..

but I won’t be happy until I get to the magical -10 🥶

And that’s during the day 🤣
