Horrible out there. Just got soaked, but the House Martins and Swallows are back. Loads of the in the meadows by the Avon in Downton. So worth it.

Met Office UK weather warnings for rain, snow, wind, fog and ice. Choose your location to keep up to date with local weather warnings.

Following recent wet weather, further rain is expected on Thursday night and through Friday. This will be persistent and, at times, heavy with 15-25mm of rain fairly widely across Devon and Cornwall. These accumulations are likely to bring areas of standing water and the chance of some flooding on Friday. The rain is likely to slowly ease during Friday evening.

Yellow Warning of rain in effect from 6am-6pm tomorrow.

Ludicrous here in the last 20 minutes , copping a back-building red/pink radar echo.

Even I have resorted to the tumble dryer today after 2 wet days, now this and bearing in mind tomorrow looks dreadful then Saturday poor!

It was fine until midday, rain gauge has 21mm in the 3 hours since then!!

You sure you not making this up? Not a drop of rain so far today, it has missed us as it trudged on it's SSW to NE route across Warminster!

Nicely developed "Eye" to the storm

Could contain: Nature, Outdoors, Storm, Hurricane

With a buoy off the SW coast of Southern Ireland measuring 982.1mb, still over 1005mb here, , just over 20mb gradient.

Mostly cloudy and breezy but dry so far as all the showers have passed well to the north. Reached 12.0°C, currently 11.1°C

It was a decent day here until about 2pm, t-shirt weather at lunchtime in the sun.

Back to heavy showers again. The nasty stuff is now tickling Cornwall and will probably arrive here in the wee hours.

Storm 'Mathis' appears to have become a little organised as the "Eye" has disappeared, with the overall shape, having become less compact..

Could contain: Nature, Outdoors, Storm, Hurricane

What a complete and utter **** month March has been weather wise. Far from being a spring month, it’s been a continuation of a pretty bleak winter. Storm Mathis rounding it off nicely.

As for putting the clock’s forward. The only change I’ve really noticed this time was that it’s darker in the mornings! Yet to see the benefit in the evenings because the weather is so poor.

To end on a positive, it looks like an improvement is on its way, just in time for Easter.

Well.....that was a classic "Storm in a teacup" wasn't it?

Minimum pressure 981mb, max wind speed 43mph, and that was across the southern UK. I bet the French meteo are pleased they named it before anybody else😏

Don't forget the the heavy rainfall (all 12mm of it). Once it lost it's "eye" yesterday it went to pieces, ah well, there we go..

Looking quite passive this morning..

Could contain: Nature, Outdoors, Storm, Hurricane

Moving on, the opportunity to increase the rainfall total still exists, looking at the radar this morning..

Could contain: Outdoors, Nature, Sea, Water

And looking slightly "choppy" this morning...

Could contain: Water, Waterfront, Nature, Outdoors, Pier, Sea

From earlier...

It’s worth remembering that despite the general cooling effect La Nina has been ushering in for the last two years, 2022 was still the fifth hottest year on record.

The hottest year ever was in 2016, a year when El Nino was in effect – which tells you what kind of impact the weather phenomenon can have.

It’s worth remembering that the last El Nino between 2014 and 2016 triggered crop failure and hit the food security of more than 60 million people around the world.

2023 is already expected to be hotter than 2022.

According to the BBC, professor Adam Scaife from the Met Office hammered home this message by saying: “Global average temperature over the last three years has been at near record levels, but it would have been even higher without the cooling effects of a prolonged La Nina.”

So, get those fans and coolers at the ready!

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
