Just notching 39 on my thermometer that is not "that" reliable before the sun hits it.

Not a cloud in the sky here, So time yet for Heathrow to notch up a little more (looking south/southeast looks clear too).

Looks correct to me.. we have just hit 40°C which is within 80 years of 2008?!

Well, yeah, safe to say that it was a lot sooner than expected though. I thought we were decades off.

I still think today is pretty special though. Can't see it being surpassed for a long while.

Yeah the AWS high was 32.4 so pretty close to each other.

Pretty sure Durham has had a 32.5 in 1990, and a 32 (maybe in 2020) as well as the 32.9 high, though I'm probably wrong.

No, you’re right.

32.9 July 25th 2019

32.5 August 3rd 1990

31.9 August 2nd 1990

31.3 July 16th 1876

31.0 July 1st 2015

19th July 2022 ???

Well, I sincerely hope it isn't. But I also said that in 2019!😂

What's scary is June 2019 was literally a ENE undercut away from similar values. Thickness and 850hpa temps would have supported a 40-41c.

This is the 2nd time we've had 24c+ at 850hpa in 3 years, and whilst this one is more severe imo its not completely without some recent historical company. Can't rule out more in the future, especially in a warming world.

Yep I'm afraid climate change means this thread and its offspring will be a regular occurrence on here and it won't be long until the next one

I think today is a little different. 2019 breaking the record by 0.2, while amazing, is hardly earth shattering. Breaking a record by perhaps 2c or more is a whole different kettle of fish, and I don't think we'll have a similar set of weather lotteries for this country for a long long while.

Save this post and come back in 2032, I bet this record still stands.

In such a unique set up, I am rather disappointed that I haven't broken a single record in the last couple of days. It looked odds on a few days prior. Roll on the next plume! 😁

Sad and disturbing day to see England hitting  40c.

Yes, climate deniers hang your heads in shame.

Hopefully this landmark day will increase pressure on Government, once they've gotten back to doing the governing bit of the job.

Go and read about the horrors of climate change and then come back here. The record won't stand long. The inexorable rise in global temperatures will ensure that, so next time there's a synoptic setup the same kind of heat plume will hit us.

Only hotter.

Cheers, I was wrong about the 32 in 2020, it was 30.8 on July 31st.

Certainly going to be hard to top today. 850s of 23-24c covering such a huge area must be right on the limit of what we can get here. That on top of the timing, dry spring, record heat in Spain/France meaning less modification etc. Everything you need for this heat is there today. To get another winning lottery ticket will be very hard. This might be set so high that it's never broken in our lifetime.....but we can never say never can we?

What also alarming is these records are getting earlier in the summer season, in theory early to mid August is the hottest part of the season.

Yes it is quite a unique set up but remember the very dry continent is another factor of climate change so its all add to the positive feedback of warming temperatures.

Another thing, when I see widespread plus 10C hpa temperatures at Svalbard like it has occurred in the past day or so(aided by ridiculas warm SSTS up there) then you know things are not right.
