Because the whole system for collating and publishing observation data is woefully outdated and not fit for purpose. The data simply hasn't come through.

It would not cost the Met Office much to modernise it, but they'll never do it.

They seem to finally be flooding in now. Not sure why it takes an automated system up to 25 minutes to release such data.

It's terrible really and such a shame that there's not a better, more standardised system. As a result, some websites only show hourly readings for the 03xxx stations, while some also show the 09xxx ones but don't show the max/mins (or even worse, show an hourly reading as the max/min).

I've only found one place where you can also get max/min readings for the 09xxx stations and that's WQRadar which I pay a subscription for (about £40/yr).

Agreed. I lived in Oklahoma for a year and we had this page for all the official sites:

It's fantastic with data every 5 mins. There's no excuse why a world-leading institution like the Met Office can't put something like this together.

Peak heat reached west half of UK now and into SE England. East parts peak heat 4pm.. then all slow climb down, more rapid in the west..

Coningsby in Lincs now showing at 40c - though this could be rounded up. Would fit what the models said though, these area peaking later in the day and perhaps overtaking.

The network is far too patchy. Should be having a look at this and fill gaps in. Look below:

That doesn't seem to include the 09xxx stations such as Writtle in Essex. There are quite a few of those but their data availability is more restricted for some reason (see my post above).

Kind of hoping we get at least one 40 somewhere that isn't Heathrow, just to avoid yet more years of people on social media arguing about that particular station...

Not that I enjoy it, but we need another site to hit 40C. Can't just be Heathrow. Otherwise we will never hear the end of the silly discussions.

Snap! 😄

I think Charlwood at 39.9 °C is second right now?

Herstmonceux currently reading 37 so our local record of 35 has gone today. My parents have a reading of 37 in sidley bexhill and I think the highest recorded here was 34. Hotter here than forecast, by 3 degrees

It doesn't (Botanic Gardens here in an 09z too)....but I think in 2022 there's no excuse. Needs modernising!

Northolt and Kew both 39.5c at 2pm, so they may squeak a 40c.

Think things will start to cool off a touch in the SE now though ahead of the front moving the uppers away.
