Durham Uni station just shy of 100F at 37.6C.  If that is confirmed it's 4.7C higher than the previous record.

Isn't Wittering an official station? Seems to say 41c.

I'm convinced Kettering got to 40.

Unfavourable official sites is the only reason IMO. Lots of places will have exceeded 40C but unfortunately the official stations are few and far between in that region.

Yes, that’s why the official record is - whisper it - a bit meaningless. Add in the lack of homogeneity between stations too. Nonetheless, this is the hottest day in the UK probably for 1000s of years. So quite notable, lol.

That reading is from a different site to the Durham Uni Observatory at Potters Bank. The AWS readings you quote are from the Geography Dept AWS. However, once the official max is in tomorrow we’ll know for sure. I expect 35-36 degC

They are.

Not seeing any higher temps on the 4pm obs, I think Coningsby has won it.

Where is the Geography Dept?  I just walked past the Potter's Bank site last week.

40.3 but no update from Met Office yet, probably waiting for 16:20 updates.

I'm amazed that nothing seems to have officially gone higher than Heathrow. Didn't they set that record before 1pm?

Since moving here 5 years back, it does seem that little bit hotter and drier than Essex overall - it's also very low lying here so I think that adds a bit on - back in 2019 I had a reading on par with the record and yesterday was it was one of the hotspots again - we need an official weather station in this area! 😀

I believe it’s on the Science site, off South Road.

They did, and the 39.1 at Charlwood was pre-noon (!).

So many stations reporting a figure that rounds to 40 that you'd figure there's at least one even higher spot somewhere. Maybe tomorrow, when we hear from stations with manual daily reporting (?), we find that spot. Certainly it sounds like that could be where we turn to for the Scottish record.

Some climatic stations only report daily, so we won’t know until tomorrow.

A Very strange day here today. We started at 23.5c min temp then it rose to 29c by 11am. At midday it went gusty with sw winds then at 13.00pm rain and some scattered storms temp fell to 23c. Now at 16.44pm after the front the temp is back up to 30c and sunny in SE winds. (Following the first front). So it's hot behind it guys at least for a while. I guess the cooler air will follow later this evening.

I suspected as much, I saw it was showing 37 earlier. Parents in Bexhill recorded 37.2 at 15:16CAF6D2B5-B86A-4908-B525-8894D9CAA103.thumb.jpeg.49baa04dc6ed64d1948f28f6b63bf983.jpeg

Indeed, I'm in Minehead for a few days, rain came through, I thought that's it, once it cleared, the temp has shot up very quickly

So glad that Coningsby has got the record, 40.3c and no "iTs nExT tO a RuNwAy" rubbish like there would be if Heathrow retained top spot
