The GFS does show an area of 25c 850 values running Kent nw towards ne England developing towards 5pm so a chance that could help nudge temps up further in those areas .

And so the fallout of the hot spell starts. At home following a heat induced migraine and the leccy has just got cut. Looking at the uk power network I am far from alone

Live power cut map for London, East Anglia and South East England

Just scroll into the map. It’s insane the number of power cuts at the hottest part of the day.

Today's records will be broken within the next 10 years, probably 5.

When you look at the heat we have seen this summer in SW Europe it's only a matter of time before we get sucked into that kind of weather. It won't just be plumes. It will be residual air lasting many days, if not weeks. The domes will sit over southern Britain during summer months.

Today is amazing but also ridiculous and the new normal. We are going to see 40C across a wide area today at this rate. The inevitable, inexorable, horror of warming climate is here right now.

Yes, that will happen. As will a repeat of the summers of 2007 and 2008. Don't be expecting amazing summer months year in year out!

Down to a nippy 32.8 °C here in north Worcestershire, over 2 degrees off my high. A lot of cloud out to the SW now, though for the moment it's high stuff. But we're on the downslope at last, I think. Longer to wait for those of you further east obviously!

Yeah I think London probably is at peak now, but further north provably still got a couple of hours of warming to go. Still could get a 41c further north.

What makes the heat so unusual is the gusty winds outside combined with temps currently at 39.5C. Feels like being hit by a blowtorch. These temps are the hottest I have ever experienced and unlikely to be reached again in my lifetime.

What's the closest official station to Worksop/Retford

Expect we could see the record gone close to there

I still think it’s insane it’s happening in my native country. I live in Aus now and I’ve experienced 48.9oC here, when it’s hot here (say 35+) it tends to be dry, gusty winds from inland Australia so I’m use to hot winds now but never thought it would happen in UK!!

Any reason why so many of the Met Office readings for 2pm haven't yet arrived? I use WQRadar normally but it's not showing them yet - neither is Weatherobs.

I've only experienced this once before, and that was in the Australian outback in summer many years ago. I remember arriving at Tennant Creek, in the Northern Territory, around 5pm, where it was 41 degrees with a 'fresh' breeze off the desert. It really did feel like standing in front of a hairdryer.

Because the whole system for collating and publishing observation data is woefully outdated and not fit for purpose. The data simply hasn't come through.

It would not cost the Met Office much to modernise it, but they'll never do it.

Yea hot weather here in Aus is often accompanied by gusty winds so we are use to hairdryer winds (dries your clothes quickly!!). I’m coming back to visit UK next week and gutted I didn’t book a week earlier to experience this historic weather!!

Ridiculous really, the network needs updating, we could miss a record temp today due to lack of coverage

My WeatherPro App which uses Heathrow for London just dropped from 40 to 39.

NW site shows 39.2 for Heathrow.

Hit the peak or late data?

It's terrible really and such a shame that there's not a better, more standardised system. As a result, some websites only show hourly readings for the 03xxx stations, while some also show the 09xxx ones but don't show the max/mins (or even worse, show an hourly reading as the max/min).

I've only found one place where you can also get max/min readings for the 09xxx stations and that's WQRadar which I pay a subscription for (about £40/yr).

It's fallen a bit on the latest update.

The network is far too patchy. Should be having a look at this and fill gaps in. Look below:
