So, Emley Moor last night didn't drop below 23.9C, therefore it's a record minimum night. However, the Met Office are discounting it because it reached a lower temperature after 9am the previous day. Absolutely ridiculous.

Such a flawed system if that is the case, ugh.

Quite a shortage of stations up that way though.

I hate the 0900-0900 system aswell. The same often occurs in winter when an ice day is scuppered the next morning by a temperature rise above freezing before 9am.

I still record both 0900-0900 and 0000 to 0000 for this very reason.

Any news from the stations e.g. Cambridge Gardens that report yesterday's data at 10am?

Quite correct as it's a 24 hr period recording time.

The person responsible is probably still finishing their coffee and crossword. In all seriousness, by the time they bother to report it we'll probably have beaten it today.

I don't understand why there are so few official stations. Surely as a minimum every major town and city should have one.

With only a select few stations in each area it doesn't feel like we get a true picture. I expect over the course of yesterday and today there will be many high temperatures hit that just don't get recorded.

I should think the record will go. 40c will be hit but whether a weather station picks it up is perhaps a little more uncertain.

I think it's a formality that numerous weather stations will record 40C.

Yes NE England particularly bad. Apart from Doncaster in the middle it looks like an empty area of a good 150-200 square miles on xc weather, and with today's set up that's the key area.

Agree that there are too few official stations- there should be a lot more and every major city should have one centrally.

Not sure why it's wrong to take readings in cities? Yes the UHI is at play, but this reflects the experience of the vast majority of people in this country- who live in urban areas.

Last night would have been very interesting with city centre stations- I can't imagine it got below 26 or 27C in Manchester city centre.

relics of the days when the MetO was a military organisation; i.e the stations are generally still only in places that were WWII air bases....example is this county of Northumberland, a huge area by UK standards, but there are only four stations; two around Newcastle Airport and two at RAF Boulmer, hardly representative though as the Airport is next to the city and Boulmer is on the freezing north sea beach!
