Not surprised to see Altnaharra so low; when I checked early this afternoon it was still below -10°C.

Now -15.6C at Altnaharra so a new coldest temperature of 2023 so far.

Other low temperatures:

-13.9C Kinbrace

-11.9C Loch Glascarnoch

-11.3C Resallach

-10.5C Braemar

-10.1C Balmoral

Surprised I thought we had seen something colder than that, was -15 degrees the previous low.. great to see it happen late season, all those who in feb say no more chance of cold and snow... blah blah blah!!!

How low did Scotland go last night/this morning?

Surprised this thread is so quiet, tonight expected to possibly be the coldest of the season in England. Current thoughts on lowest minima..

Oh well I'll keep this alive a little longer, -15.2 the low yesterday in Altnaharra, an impressive run of low minima for March.

Not a coldest by any means  but -9.0C at Tulloch Bridge this morning is pretty chilly for the time of year. Also the -11.6, -12.5 and -12.5 they had a few weeks back is good going as well.

Thanks for posting in this thread, it has stayed alive a lot longer than a number of seasons recently.. Yes -9 degrees is cold, but not notable.

What were the lowest minima figures for this season, both Scotland and England and dates please.

Thanks, decent enough but nothing very notable.

Fairly average in the last 20 years but the 12 winters from 1976 averaged -21 deg!

Yes, the cold came rather too early this year in December, without significant snow cover. Had the synoptics in early-mid Dec arrived a month later, then a low below -20 degrees could very easily have surfaced.

Braemar dipped to -17.3C in December.

As for England, somewhere in Gloucestershire dipped to -15C in December.

-17.3 degrees is a decent low minima, and -15 degrees in Gloucestershire also. Pleasing to note we can still record low minima without the need for deep cold uppers. Homegrown UK cold can deliver the goods.

And that was without widespread snow cover.

Yes, good snow cover aids lower temps and had we seen such conditions then lows below -20 degrees probably would have been recorded think Dec 2010. The combination of minimal solar heating in the depths of dark season helped, and a few days of very still air that wasn't mixed out helped produce the low temps. The run of 4 ice days 11th-15th was great and added the christmas seasonal feeling - far more preferable the usual wet mild mush we have, pity the 7th-17th couldn't have waited 10 days, 17th-27th.. to give a seasonal run in to christmas and cold wintry Christmas Day, better still perhaps optimum timing would have been 21st - 31st December.. how wonderful a seasonal christmas.

That was a chilly one for July. It's just about possible that someone up early might have seen a touch of frost on their cars in a sheltered spot of Redesdale Valley.

Surprised how cool it actually got, we only reached a min of 11C which isn't all that impressive. Think the last time we had a properly chilly July night was in 2020, can recall it falling to 6C multiple times.

You'd think the CET would be tanking as a result of these lows. Tulloch Bridge probably a frost hollow.

The colder air has not extended fully down to the CET region. It's basically been cool in northernmost England and Scotland and only cold in places with no cloud at night.  Look at recent weeks' cloud cover for Redesdale (Northumbria)  and Aboyne (Grampians)  for instance. I suppose the bottom of any glacial valley in the North could see a touch of frost if the weather is cool and it gets a cloud free night - even in July. The last couple of nights have only been a few degrees cooler than what normally happens in isolated spots anyway, I suppose.
