I noted before RobR's observation that Nantwich in Cheshire went from 37.8 on 19th July to -10 the night befin July to -11.4c whether anyone can beat that?

I had a 50.6c difference (39.2c down to -11.4c on Thursday morning)

End of the very cold spell for many, tonight looks frosty still but temps not on a par with recent nights as we see milder air move in from the west. Surfaces will stay below freezing though and ice will not clear, Sunday will be the day of a rapid thaw, thankfully we haven't had much snow, otherwise flooding would be on the cards for most.

There was a -10.4C near Chelmsford so its possible some in the Southeast only had their coldest night last night. We only just missed it here.

Meanwhile rivers that have frozen are still freezing up further:

I arrived in Chelmsford last night and the conditions were treacherous on the roads to the north, freezing fog everywhere and extremely cold as you mentioned.

Anyone know the minima for each UK country? Also, how did Ireland do?

Yes would be good to know minima for Scotland, England, Wales and N Ireland out of the recent cold period. I think -17.6 degrees Braemar the cold spot, quite impressive for so early in the season. I know Redesdale Camp, England went down close to -12 degrees. Possibly Benson and Shap beat it.

Its been an exceptional change in 24 hours, we don't see these sort of swticharounds after heatwaves, but comparable I guess to a cold northerly after a high pressure spell in June.

Re the English low, see Aleman's post a couple of pages back:

England possibly got a -15C out of this.

-14.5 degrees is good going, beats many a whole winter, and only mid December!

We've got an aunt of Mrs A visiting for lunch. She says her car indicated -17C two weeks ago when visiting her daughter up in the hills west of Edinburgh, where there was about 6 inches of snow, and that somebody up there had their car indicate -25C on their travels in the snowfields near Banff. Both are rather colder than the prevailing station reports but urban heat island effects were very pronounced at the time so I would not dismiss them as being unrealistic. Of course, you'd expect cars to report lower temperatures than stations at times so this does not mean it's been any colder than say, 2010, but it's still worth a comment, I think.

Evidence we have had very little cold weather to talk about since 17th December... this thread has become buried.. but as I always do, it comes out when cold minima are forecast.

Nothing exceptionally cold on the cards, but widespread below -5 degree values expected tonight in sheltered spots, I think -10 degrees was recorded in Scotland last night - anyone verify..

Tonight may see another -10 degrees somewhere.

Topcliffe current coldest spot a not to be dismissed -7 degrees, followed by Benson on -6.3 degrees. Could see -10 degrees somewhere in England early hours, and some were saying no chance of cold this January.

Herne Bay did quite well with minimums last night.

Got down to -4.6C at 8 in the morning and grass down to -7.4C. Coldest around here since 2018

How low did we go this morning then? Anyone in this thread? Snow gets attention, but cold not so it seems!

Must have been cold down here, frozen pipes on the boiler first time in over 40 years!

Topcliffe -9.8C yesterday morning.  A balmy -5.8C this morning.

Topcliffe the cold spot last couple of days. May be further east tonight. This is a typical mid winter cold spell, in some years would pass without much notice, in others would be as good as it gets, alas we have already had a very decent cold spell in December. February and March still to come as well.

Surprisingly the lowest temps in England last 24 hours were far south locations, Southampton on -6 degrees, Yeovilton on -5.3 for example, Aviemore only managed -5 degrees, suspect because the clearest skies and lightest winds were in the far south, sheltered from the NW flow. Tonight should see Scotland cold spot, much lighter winds, Aviemore currently on -5.3 degrees, can see this dropping markedly overnight.

Interesting to note how temps continue still to drop after dawn for a good hour sometimes at the moment, indicative of the very slow gradual increase of light in the mornings, this tends to not happen from about second week of Feb onwards as light levels and heating from the sun intervenes.

Tuesday morning saw temperatures at -8c in Carlisle and -9c near Penrith, helped of course by the snow cover.

With more cloud Wednesday morning wasn't as cold with minimums around -2c

Not sure if this morning or yesterday morning, but a notable low of -10 degrees in Benson, widely below -6 degrees much of central/southern england, -8 at Odiham, -7.9 Pershore, -7.4 Woburn.

Whilst nothing exceptional for the core of winter, proves again don't need particularly cold uppers at this time of year to produce low minimum temps.

We had our coldest evening of this winter yesterday (though not quite our coldest temperature).  The central heating was struggling with the cold before we went to bed but it did better this morning. We hit a low of  -5.5C at around midnight but then started to warm up, rising about 2C in the next hour. We were closing in on positive temperatures shortly after dawn. There were several places in Yorkshire at -6C or -7C at midnight. Coldest I've found since was -8.2C near Harrogate. They were all much warmer by dawn. So, numerous Yorkshire stations recorded colder temperatures late yesterday evening then they did yesterday morning but morning saw positive temperatures at dawn or not long after.

Further South and East in the UK, it continued to cool until dawn and was generally colder than the morning before.  There is even the possibility that tonight will be colder than either of the previous two in a few limited spots of the East/Southeast where the cold air persists. There's already been a -8.0C hit but whether it keeps going or not down remains to be seen as warmer air slowly finishes moving across the country.

Perhaps inversion type cold. Heathrow got down to -8.4C, with relatively high uppers. Coldest night since 2012.
