Minimum Temperature Watch 2023-2024 season

Time to start this thread I feel, given we experienced cold mins in the early hours, in frost prone spots. Shap the lowest at -3.7 degrees.

Please use this thread to speculate lowest min temp of the new season. Last year, correct if wrong I think the min was in Scotland about -17 degrees, either Dec or March?

My guess, -18 degrees Altnaharra, -16 Shap.

Use this to record your lowest min of season so far.

It will be the tracker thread for monitoring lowest min. It often gets lost in other threads whenever a cold spell is impending, but I will resurrect it.

I said I'll keep this thread alive. Shap went down to -4 degrees, that is the current english low. What is the current scottish low?

Shap already below freezing, but I doubt it will go as low as Sunday morning.

Shap did squeeze out a new low of -4.1C somewhere around 4am. Tulloch Bridge was -4.6C. That might be the lowest for Scotland under 1000 feet?

Northern England also had it chilly. I've seen a -0.2C in the Yorkshire Wolds and -0.7C in the Yorkshire Dales.

We've struggled to even get a ground frost so far this year. This morning just managed it with a min of 3.2C, but cold nights have really been rare. In fact, we've only dropped below 5C on 7 occasions so far.

Its just too cloudy and often windy overnight for it.

First air frost ticked off for us. It dropped to -0.6C this morning.

It looks like the low was -6C at Glasgow Airport.

There is no comaprison with those offical UKMO stations against the location that we managed to find in summer, myself Lansat analysis and Highland weather sorted the placement - Foregin last night -7.8°C and now already -1.5°C coldest by 1.1°C vs other frost hollows

-6.8 degrees early hours Altnaharra. Current low of the season.

Altnaharra actually bottomed out at -7.1C sometime after 6 am, so that's the new seasonal low to run with.

Thanks good going for this early stage in the season. There is cold air to tap into it seems, and I can see N Scotland seeing more of it in December advecting further south at times.

Dusting this thread - as anticipate the current minimas will be challenged in period ahead.

What is the current English minima?

I can see a few prone spots such as Shap dropping close to or below -5 degrees.

Thanks, could be beat early hours will be keeping an eye on temps this eve.

Already below -2C in several places just south of the M4, plus a few further north in western England. The lowest I can see is -2.8C just south of Bristol. At this rate, the previous -4.1C English low at Shap is going to be comfortably beaten and Altnaharra's UK low of -7.1C  from a week ago could be under threat.

We have new lows for 3 home nations :

Wales -5.6C Sennybridge

England -6.7C South of Bristol

Scotland -8.0C Roberton

Might yet edge lower but winds are swinging to SW and downward trends have turned erratic. There are odd pockets that are nearly as  cold further east that might keep dopping, though.

Nearby in Great Asby it dropped to -6.6º at 7.15am.

I've got -3.1C in N. Ireland, which might not be a new low, then new lows at :

Wales - Sennybridge -6.0C

England - South Bristol -7.9C

Scotland - Roberton -8.5C

Sennybridge is a Met station and the other two are not. (Met station lows for England and Scotland are Shap's -7.7C and Eskdalemuir's -6.9C.)

Might see -7.7 beaten in the coming days. Cumbria the cold pole of England, Shap, Spadeadam, Keswick and Carlisle could see a run of sub -5 nights... brr!
