This sounds like a fun idea, I'll go with late July 1990.

There was no heatwave in late July 1990. I'll go with the safe assumption that you mean August 1990?

I'll reserve August 1990 for you in the assumption this is what you mean.

I'll go for the first non summer entry.

Sept 2023.

I wasn't even in the country for this so I've no idea what it was like. Looking forward to finding out.

September 2023 has entered the competition, nominated by rwtwm! September 2023 was an absolute beast even by the standards of true summer. Despite being a September heatwave I suspect it will be expected to go quite far by many.

Current entrants:

August 2003 (Summer8906)

August 2020 (LetItSnow)

July 2022 (Summer of 95)

July 2013 (daveinSB)

July 2006 (Row w)

July 2021 (matty40s)

June/July 1976 (Metwatch)

September 2023 (rwtwm)

So we're now up to eight heatwaves. I can think of many more to be nominated yet! We probably want at least 16 entries before we can begin the tournament 🥳

August 2022 and August/September 1906 have entered the competition, nominated by SummerShower and alexisj9 respectively!

Current entrants:

August 2003 (Summer8906)

August 2020 (LetItSnow)

July 2022 (Summer of 95)

July 2013 (daveinSB)

July 2006 (Row w)

July 2021 (matty40s)

June/July 1976 (Metwatch)

September 2023 (rwtwm)

August 2022 (SummerShower)

August/September 1906 (alexisj9)

Assuming @Capser nominates August 1990, we are now at 11 heatwaves! I think some more Junes should be nominated, but I'm just the host... 🤔

How about July and August 1911?

As July and August 1911 are two distinct heatwaves, they will have to be nominated separately. Which one would you like to nominate?

April 2003 I believe was an impressive warm spell?

Unfortunately entrants must be between May and September. Heatwaves in late September that just spilled over into October may be considered. I don't think the opposite case has ever occurred.

I'll go for August 1911. That had the record high temperature at that time.

August 1995 has entered the competition, nominated AderynCoch! I was expecting this to be one of the first entrants! I wonder if August 1995 is a potential finalist?

Current entrants:

August 2003 (Summer8906)

August 2020 (LetItSnow)

July 2022 (Summer of 95)

July 2013 (daveinSB)

July 2006 (Row w)

July 2021 (matty40s)

June/July 1976 (Metwatch)

September 2023 (rwtwm)

August 2022 (SummerShower)

August/September 1906 (alexisj9)

July 1983 (Freeze)

August 1990 (Capser)

August 1997 (hillbilly)

August 1911 (Harry's House)

August 1995 (AderynCoch)

It looks like we have most of the major Augusts now. I can think of a few more Julys to be nominated, and quite a few Junes... Also waiting on the first May entrant...

July 2018 is a difficult one. On the one hand, the heatwave is almost continuous from June 24th. On the other hand, it has three separate breaks, all one day each before 28.0C+ resumes. I'm not sure I can consider the whole event as a single heatwave and apply the exception three separate times... Should June/July 2018 and late July 2018 remain as temporally distinct, or should the exception be applied? If we apply the exception then the June/July 2018 heatwave will be a serious heavyweight.

July 2019 and August 1947 have entered the competition, sponsored by R Alto and MP-R respectively!

Current entrants:

August 2003 (Summer8906)

August 2020 (LetItSnow)

July 2022 (Summer of 95)

July 2013 (daveinSB)

July 2006 (Row w)

July 2021 (matty40s)

June/July 1976 (Metwatch)

September 2023 (rwtwm)

August 2022 (SummerShower)

August/September 1906 (alexisj9)

July 1983 (Freeze)

August 1990 (Capser)

August 1997 (hillbilly)

August 1911 (Harry's House)

August 1995 (AderynCoch)

July 2019 (R Alto)

August 1947 (MP-R)
