Upon consultation with my referee who will remain unidentified, it has been ruled that the June-July 2018 events will not be permitted the four separate exceptions required to enter as a single heatwave.

June 24th-July 9th, July 13th-July 16th and July 19th-July 27th will have to be nominated as separate heatwaves.

There is also a fourth notable heatwave from August 2nd-August 7th 2018, should anyone want to nominate that.

As we are running out of people to nominate heatwaves and we still need some more, I will now allow people to nominate multiple heatwaves (but don't nominate every single one you can think of). Preferably nominate a June as we're missing most of those. All four 2018 heatwaves can also be nominated, although I'd prefer if you only nominate one each. August 2019 too. There's still plenty more of every month. Try to nominate more Septembers and Mays too.

August 1975 and May/June 1947 have joined the competition, both nominated by hillbilly! Our first May contestant arrives, although it's a joint heatwave. Will we see a full May heatwave nominated?

@Sun Chaser

I'll go with June 24th - July 9th as that gave Plymouth (where I was at the time) clear blue skies for days on end and our first 30c since 2006.

I have pinged everyone in this update as to notify you all that you are free to make more nominations! I will permit two more nominations per person, and three per person if you haven't nominated yet. I will not mention everyone in each update as to not annoy people with notifications.

June/July 1976 has unfortunately already been nominated. Please nominate up to three other heatwaves!

May 1833 occurred before the use of Stevenson Screens and standardised measurement standards, so unfortunately will not be eligible to compete. As you have already nominated July 1983, please nominate a maximum of two more heatwaves if you wish!

September 2016? I couldn't remember if this was officially a heatwave, but it appears it was

From the Met Office:

Quote

A brief heatwave from 12 to 15 September brought exceptionally high temperatures to southeast England, accompanied by some torrential downpours causing flash flooding. On 13 September, Gravesend (Kent) recorded 34.4 °C, the UK's highest temperature of the year and the highest September temperature since 1911; this value being around 14 °C above the long-term average. Daily minimum temperatures for 14 September were also exceptionally high, at a few locations exceeding 20 °C. The heat was associated with a southerly flow of air from France and Spain, with the humidity leading to thunderstorms bringing intense downpours and causing flash-flooding. Several locations recorded hourly totals exceeding 30mm.

May/June 1947 (hillbilly)

June/July 2018 (Sun Chaser)

August 1930 (Metwatch)

August 1932 (Metwatch)

Looks like we're amassing quite the lineup now. Note that nominated heatwaves don't necessarily have to be total giants, mid-tier heatwaves can be nominated too. We need some mid-tiers to stop the giants from knocking each other out in the first couple of rounds, and to also have the odd upset win 😄So if you can't think of any for your two bonus nominations (although there's still quite a few left), use your imagination a bit and nominate a less well-known heatwave! The more entrants we have, the better🥳

September/October 2011 has also been cleared for nomination, should anyone like to nominate that heatwave.

Is July 1868 eligible? If so, I would like to nominate it.

Thank you

Unfortunately, formal records are scarce to nonexistent for that heatwave, so while undoubtebly hot (likely >36C in Kent, and Gravesend or Faversham could've even seen 37C with the kind of temps in Tonbridge, and was probably the first >36C day since July 1808, which tells you how rare these temps were back then), July 1868 will not be eligible for nomination ☹️

Freeze and SummerShower both have one nomination left, while Harry's House and all other previous nominators (apart from hillbilly) have two!

Which matchup do you think would be the most interesting out of the list so far? Personally I think June 2023 vs August 1997, or August 2020 vs August 1990 would be really entertaining matches 🥳 We'll have to see which matchups we get...

Since a lot of the best heatwaves have been taken, I'll add four potential items of cannon fodder for better heatwaves to beat in Round 1. I know three is the maximum, but not sure if these will qualify under the more stringent criteria (min 3 consecutive days 28C), whereas a Met Office heatwave can include temperatures as low as 25C for three consecutive days depending on the counties.

If any of these don't meet the criteria, then I've got the fourth one as a backup.

June 2010

September 2016

June 2017

June 2022
