July 2022 wins!

While July 1983 is no pushover, it had absolutely no chance against this demon spawn. Congratulations Summer of 95, July 2022 is advancing to round 2! Bad luck Freeze, July 1983 is off home to Liphook 😆

July 2022 has also set a new record for average daily maximum at 34.2°C, beating August 2020 by 0.1°C! It fell just short of the daily minimum record by 0.2°C, which has been successfully defended by August 2020.

That concludes the last 1v1 of round 1! The final match of the round will be August 2022 vs June 2023 vs September 2023 at 8pm! Who do you think will win that match? 🥳

August 2022 wins!

While neither June nor September 2023 are pushovers by any means, I think its easy to forget how big August 2022 really is. Congratulations SummerShower, August 2022 is advancing to round 2! Bad luck rwtwm, September 2023 is off home to Kew Gardens 😆 And June 2023 is of course on its way home, but seeing as August 2022 is through, I doubt SummerShower is that bothered 😁

Personally I would've liked to see September 2023 in round 2, but it is what it is.

And with that, round 1 is over! We have 20 contestants remaining. Who will win? Who will lose? Find out in round 2! Adios for now 🫡

As far as I'm concerned the 16-day stretch of 32C temps, in June-July 1976, beats all of the more recent efforts put together! 😊

Well, put together, that would be equal to several months of heatwave in a row, so this is quite clearly not the case 🤣

Quietly confident as May 1944 had a proper struggle against a heatwave that peaked in October! Also interesting that two heatwaves exactly 10 years apart are matched up - with the hot weather peaking on both July 19th 2006 and July 19th 2016, a stat I've always found fun.

I would've preferred to see September/October 2011 as the token Round 2 underdog to be honest. Of course, neither one would have any chance against any others in Round 2, but as the only October heatwave in existence I'd personally think it would deserve to be the underdog a bit more than May 1944 considering there is another partial May example through (which has much better chances of course).

Unfortunately most of the major September heatwaves weren't nominated, and we are "missing" a big May heatwave, so this is the best we have 🤔 Maybe if we have a second season next year, we may have a new May or September heatwave to nominate 😆

Both powerful heatwaves even by today's standards, this was a very close match. However, August 1911 has just outlived August 1932's laser-focus. Congratulations Harry's House, August 1911 is moving on to the quarterfinals! Bad luck Metwatch, August 1932 is off home to Halstead 😆

Today's second match will be June 1957 vs June 2017! Who do you think will win that match? 🥳

Bad luck WYorksWeather, June 2022 has been absolutely humiliated and is going home embarassed to Santon Downham 😆

With that, the match week has now ended. Sunday's matches will be August 1995 vs August 2022 at 2pm and August 1990 vs August 2020 at 5pm. Both very big August derbies!

I wonder if July 2022 will force its way through June/July 1976 now to try and settle the score with July 2019? I doubt its very happy about June 2022 getting humiliated like this... It has a huge struggle ahead if it wants a chance at putting July 2019 in its place 😬

Congratulations AderynCoch, August 1995 is advancing to the quarterfinals! Bad luck SummerShower, August 2022 is off home to Wiggonholt 😆

Today's second match will be August 1990 vs August 2020 at 5pm! Who do you think will win that match? 🥳

Even though it lost, July 1983 is the clear winner in my eyes for sunshine and overall classicness. July 2022 was concentrated and the rest was quite good, but July 1983 was the real deal. Can you even imagine a July like that with a heat spike like 2022? 20C material, that’s what.

August 1995 wins!

While August 2022 is undoubtely no pushover, it is evidently absolutely nothing compared to the absolute behemoth that is August 1995. I was expecting 1995 to win but not by this much! Congratulations AderynCoch, August 1995 is advancing to the quarterfinals! Bad luck SummerShower, August 2022 is off home to Wiggonholt 😆

Today's second match will be August 1990 vs August 2020 at 5pm! Who do you think will win that match? 🥳

Looking at August 1995 laid out like that, combined with June and July before it, you really do get the sense of what a behemoth that summer was. Apart from about two days blip of *just* 25-26C, an unbroken simmering heatwave. I often think how adult peoples  perception of summer must have changed at that time. Coming out of the mostly poor summers of the mid to late 20th century, it must have seemed like someone pressed a button. Even to non enthusiasts.

August 2020 wins!

For what was and still is an absolute record-setting unit, August 1990 has been very comfortably beaten by August 2020. Is there anything that can stop this total monstrosity? Congratulations LetItSnow!, August 2020 is through to the quarterfinals! Bad luck Capser, August 1990 is off home to Cheltenham 😆

With that, today's matches have been concluded and tomorrow will be a holiday as it's New Year's. Tuesday's matches will be May 1944 vs June/July 2018 at 2pm and July 2022 vs June/July 1976 at 5pm! Who do you think will win those matches? 🥳

On that note, thank you all for your continued participation in this game. This was an idea that popped into my head one morning and I wasn't expecting it to take off at all. Happy new year to you all 🫡🎆

June/July 2018 wins!

While May 1944 has done well to make it this far, I think we all knew it was a hard ask to beat June/July 2018. Congratulations Sun Chaser, June/July 2018 is moving on to the quarterfinals! Bad luck Capser, May 1944 is off home to... various places 🤔

May 1944 was also Capser's last nominee, and I believe they are the first nominator to be eliminated from the second round. Better luck next time!

Today's second match is July 2022 vs June/July 1976 at 5pm! I imagine this one is the far more anticipated match of today. Who do you think will win? 🥳

28th: 34.5°C Cheltenham (35.6°C at Mayflower Park is far too high - Nearby station in S'ton records only 34.4°C, and most south coast stations are <34°C. The previous day of 35.5°C at M'flower is more accurate as the other S'ton station was at 35.3°C)

3rd: 35.9°C Cheltenham
4th: 34.1°C Cheltenham, North Heath
5th: 33.1°C Benson, Mayflower Park (S'ton)
6th: 34.3°C Cheltenham (Cheltenham being so much higher than other stations in the area all the time is a bit suspicious, somewhat like with Heathrow today, but nearby Innsworth also shows elevated temps compared to the surrounding area on this day, so I'm willing to allow the explanation of hill shelter for Cheltenham)
7th: 32.7°C Cheltenham
8th: 31.1°C Benson
9th: 28.8°C Lossiemouth, East Dereham (Cambridge NIAB and Hampton Loade both disqualified)

July 2022 wins!

😲😱No way! Not only was I expecting 1976 to win, even if it did lose, I wasn't expecting it to lose this badly! This is an upset for sure. People won't be happy with this one. I think we might need riot police! Congratulations Summer of 95, July 2022 is through to the quarterfinals! Bad luck Metwatch, June/July 1976 is off home to Cheltenham, which is not a sentence I was expecting to be saying 😬

As June/July 1976 was Metwatch's last nominee, this also means Metwatch has been eliminated from the tournament. Better luck next time!

Well, with that unexpected result, that brings today's matches to an end. Tomorrow will be the last day of Round 2, with August 1947 vs May/June 1947 at 2pm, and July 2006 vs July 2016 at 5pm! Who do you think will win those matches? 🥳
