While I remember 2003 clearly, the absolute maxes overshadowed in my memory just how prolonged that spell of weather was! An absolute monster of a heatwave that's going to take some beating!

Indeed, and that in my mind is why even though its record has now been beaten twice, it still ranks higher than anything else as aside from August 1911 it's the only all-time record that was set as part of a really prolonged, extremely hot spell of weather. July 2022 was followed by the hottest August on the east coast and August 2019 after July was a really warm and uncomfortably humid month but August 2003 is the only one that had everything.

However, we'll have to see how far August 2003 goes in the tournament 🥳

August 1947 wins!

Against my expectations, August 1947 has indeed run away with the match and July 2014 is weaker than I remember when I tested it for nomination. Congratulations MP-R, August 1947 is advancing to round 2! Bad luck SummerShower, July 2014 is on the next flight home to Portsmouth 😆

Today's next match is August 1955 vs July 2016 at 4pm! Who do you think will win that match? 🥳

Although late, I think that was a match worth waiting for. Two very comparable heatwaves that couldn't get ahead of each other, but in the end, July 2016 clearly had the upper hand in Sudden Death. Small question; any chance these could be swapped so 1976 could go up against August 2020, I think that would be more interesting to compare 😉

I'd rather not have either June/July 1976 or August 2020 go out in the first round while relative nobodies like July 2016 and May 1944 are in the second, which I hate to disappoint Summer of 95 and Casper but will more than likely be laughed at. You wouldn't ask for the matches to be rigged so Argentina can take on France in the first round of the World Cup, would you? The big matches will start coming in from round 2 😁

My other reason for not doing this is the first round wasn't a random pot. These were determined matches and I'd rather these big matches happen out a hat, if that makes sense.

If both heatwaves are good enough then chances are they'll face each other in the quarters or semis regardless of the hat.

Also, I believe there's a bit of a conflict of interest going on here. I noticed that June/July 1976 is your nominee 😆 Not only would that on its own be corruption, you already have August 1932 through to the second round in case 76 was to lose. August 2020 is @LetItSnow!'s only nominee, so if 76 won his only nominee who is also a very strong contender would be out in the first round, where as it stands August 2020 is likely to make it to at least the quarters.

Would LetItSnow! be okay with allowing his nominee's match to be fixed though? If he is (knowing the risk) then perhaps I can consider it. @hillbilly and @matty40s would also have to okay the change. I of course can't know LetItSnow's inner thoughts, but I'd bet on him wanting the guarenteed round 2 seat! 🤣

I really don't mind what you do as long as it's realistic. I am only looking at the game statistically to see how each heatwave compares - I'm not really looking at it as a game. 😅

Having said that, we haven't switched before so I don't know why we'd start now. I think 1976 would win from longevity but in a way I think August 2020 is more exceptional and if it had the length of 1976 it goes to show what's possible nowadays.

I believe the old method of agreeing to match fixing was brown paper bags ...George Graham style..

June/July 2018 wins!

As was likely expected by many, June/July 2018 has pulled quite an easy win against August 1959, although perhaps not one as crazy as many would think for the joint-hottest July on record... Congratulations Sun Chaser, June/July 2018 is advancing to round 2! Bad luck A Face like Thunder, August 1959 is off home to Leicester 😆

Today's evening match is September 1973 vs July 2019 at 7pm! Who do you think will win this match? 🥳

😂☹️.

Only joking, we were not actually in the country in 1959, so I was only going on what I had been told about the very good summer of 1959. Fingers crossed for my final choice!

August 1959 to be fair was quite strong for its day, aside from the heatwave a lot of the month was spent above 25C. June/July 2018 is actually quite close to what I'd think a modern day version of August 59 would look like. Of course a pre-climate change vs post-climate change variants of a similar heatwaves match will have the post-CC win 😆

Not to worry, perhaps August 1995 will want a word with J/J 2018 in round 2 🤣

Not to quibble too much (since I won anyway), but why is total days above 30C (which is shown as 5 days each in the summary) then recorded as a win for July 1959, rather than a draw?

July 2019 wins!

In what was a guarenteed win for the powerful, focused giant, July 2019 has catastrophically defeated the second-to-last September contestant remaining in the tournament. Congratulations R Alto, July 2019 is advancing to round 2! Bad luck Harry's House, September 1973 is off home to Gillingham 😆

I think you are all aware by now how much I dislike July 2019, and to be honest I'm just glad September 1973 managed to score a point. July 2019 has so far achieved the highest average maxima and minima! Who do you think could beat such a giant from the current lineup?

That concludes today's matches. Tomorrow's matches are August 1975 vs August 2020 at 1pm, June/July 1976 vs July 2021 at 4pm and May/June 1978 vs June 2022 at 7pm! Tomorrow will also be the last full match day of Round 1, with Thursday holding the last 1v1 and the final Battle Royale of the round. After that, Round 1 will be completed and Round 2 will be scheduled! 🥳

Apologies, I thought July 1959 had six days for some reason! It's too late to edit the post now but I'll quickly correct the score here:

Total days of heatwave: It's a tie! (1-1)
Total days above 30.0C: July 1959 (2-1)
Total days above 34.0C: It's a tie! (3-2)
