Pretty damn grim in the marginals. Winds picked up and squally outbreaks of rain coming through, temp 9.9C and dropping. Forecast looks about the same for next 4-5 days with some intense looking lows in the flow. Got a walk (and litter pick annoyingly) in yesterday in the gap between depressions as well as pruning some of the village fruit trees. Need a break in the weather-time to start hedge and tree planting and I want to go fishing!!

A 'typically' grim December day; grey, with rain and wind, and poor light levels.

As others have asked, when is the cold arriving - or is it a case of being pushed back, and before we know it, it's mid/late February.

Grim out there, another pulse of very heavy rain moving through, a write off day, thank goodness for yesterday's brief reprieve.

Very low light levels, curtains being drawn at 4pm - can only get better!.. the last 3 weeks very much endurance test for cold, dry, frost and snow lovers.

First signs of temps looking a little more seasonal around 4th Jan, coastal areas still look a bit mild though. All subject to change.

Has storm Gerrit peaked now?

I can predict cold temps, heavy frosts and probably snow as we get into January. I'm off to Spain so I can bet 100% the North West will have 'good' weather

What better way to spend my **th birthday than in the Blackpool Tower ballroom dancing with Mrs FLT and partaking of a delicious afternoon tea. The weather may have been foul outside but it was certainly dry and warm indoors. Now all I need is for my favourite team - Crystal Palace - to stuff Chelsea this evening and I shall be a truly happy man.

Interesting that as we came out of the Tower, the rain was clearing and blue sky was taking its place from the West for the last hour of daylight. And, as we came down the M55, there was a rainbow to die for which lasted all the way to Preston. If only there had been a pot of treasure waiting for us at Preston!

There's quite a pronounced squall-line developing in the Irish Sea which is inbound for the NW overnight with plenty of active strikes within the convection core, this would be the area expected to bring the strongest gales by morning and possibly some localised sferics before making it's way Eastwards.

Looking at going out but finding somewhere to position to watch it when Liverpool to Manchester along M62 is quite a hard pick!

It's  quite lively, I'm picking up more sferics on the radio than what is shown on the map.

Lightning high in the clouds very distantly to the West of Macclesfield. Wind picking up but no thunder yet. Not got a good feeling about it, wondering about not chasing it. Looks like it really packs a punch.

Looks nasty on the radar. A squally few hours to come maybe - the ITV Granada Forecast earlier did mention the potential of thunder and lightning associated with 'squally showers' overnight as they put it.

Brilliant blue flashes of heat (lol) lightning to the West. Literally electric blue.
