Noticed particularly large raindrops yesterday as well along with some graupel bits at times.

21.8 mm of rain for the year already. That's probably close to 1/5 of the January average in 1 1/2 days; not sure as don't have any averages near this location to go by.

Surface flooding in places around here. Miserable.

A few of these starting to appear around these parts where culverts are either collapsed, blocked or are no longer of sufficient size to take the increase in water flow caused by new building work.

Whatever the reason though, the end result is always the same with roads and pavements being lifted by the sheer pressure of water and surfaces becoming potentially dangerous due to the washed out voids lurking underneath.

Obviously it’s not helped by the amount of rain over the last few months but all we need now is a highways department which understands that the problem can’t be sorted by just filling in the pot hole made when the water stops coming out.

Its going to be very icy come weekend with all this water running off.

Potholemaggedon looks on the cards one the frost gets to work.

The rain has been incessant since mid-morning.  Relatively mild but it still makes for a pretty grim start to 2024.  Really looking forward to the higher pressure forecast over the weekend………

I'm not a betting man, but I would not be one bit surprised if it is just dull with the odd shower.

Quite a significant rainfall event here in Cheshire - lots of surface flooding and difficult travelling conditions across the county steady heavy rain from around 9am and still raining heavily. If only it was snow! ❄️🙃 😄

A truly miserable day here once the rain set in this morning with flooding in many places on local roads and plenty more to come.

@Kasim Awan you're cool in model thread! certainly know your stuff

I was just about to post, don’t let the mod thread stop you posting in here. We are a good bunch in the NorthWest thread, I’ve never seen hostility in here.

Ive got lots on the blocked list in that thread.

Ensembles looking decent, not the best of all time but we cannot expect a brutal Dec 2010 can we? Main thing is it's going to dry out, much needed and wanted by most of us. And temps struggling to get much above zero from early next week. The good thing is there isn't loads of perturbation stragglers that take us into the mild category, most are firmly below the average so that's always a good sign if you want a longer cold spell rather than a snap. It's about time we had a decent cold spell in January anyway and now, finally, after 11 years it looks like we are going to get one. 2013 seems ages now.

Flood Alert now in-place for lower-lying areas in Whaley Bridge along the River Goyt with localised floods being reported in/around the High Peak from Bakewell to the A54. There was also a Earthquake recorded in Buxton at 17:30 measuring 2.5 at a 3km depth, although it wouldn't have been strong enough to have felt it here further north.

Good job the outlook is drier, this trend would have hit record levels if we got another couple of days like these.

Fingers crossed that this forecast drier spell is at least a week or ten days long. 2024 has certainly continued in the same vein as the end of 2023. We've just passed 40mm for the 1st 2 days. That also means we've had 100mm in the last week and 300mm in the last calendar month. A horribly wet period of weather.

Can’t imagine piling and rebar work being much fun in a hole at this time of year with this rain

Heavy pouring rain to match the post festive season mood to start to the new working year for many. A pattern change is coming though this weekend - turning drier, colder with frosts becoming more severe with time, wintry showers for eastern parts of the region as early as next Monday and the potential for a reload and lock in of more significant cold and snow potential as we approach mid January - people need not to get ahead of themselves, there will be upgrades and downgrades along the way but a cold spell that becomes more severe as we approach mid month and importantly the core of winter is on the table as an option for mid winter something we haven't seen properly since Winter 2012/13 - tying in with the MO thoughts for several weeks now.

Yes strong similiarities with winter 12-13 in context of outlook. In 12-13 we started the winter cold, this imploded mid month Dec and a very wet very mild 4 week spell occured followed by cold by mid Jan.. late Jan and short bits of Feb were milder but overall a very cold 3 month period ensued..

This winter started cold but much more brief affair, followed by very mild very wet.. with expected change to cold by mid Jan..

Back to today's weather, thoroughly uninviting , heavy rain, gloomy and dark.. a very post festive feeling. Looking forward to sunnier days by the weekend, can't come soon enough, need it to dry out.

Jan 2021 was decent early in the month a cold frosty spell with light snow..Indeed we had a number of snow days that month. Jan 2013 was the last time we had a lengthy persistant cold spell of roughly 2 weeks.
