Beautiful day today!  Really gusty wind this morning but it died off during the afternoon.  Went for a long walk and when out of the wind and in the sunshine it just made me yearn for springtime.

Gritters have just been spreading on the road at the back of my house.

Cant be for anything else other than ice risk.

Very strange!  Surely there's pretty much a zero risk tonight?

Forecast did say it could drop to 1°C so I suspect ground frost is what they are predicting.

Been a stunning day, but felt chilly.  Some small branch debris about this morning, and there's still a few fields looking water logged.  Clear, dry night ahead, temp at 8pm 3.8°C.

After alot of weather to discuss recently, snow, freeze, heavy rain and gales.. its all very quiet again and really not alot to talk about weatherwise..A non-descript type weekend ahead, and perhaps that's just what is needed..

Still waiting for a decent winter walking weekend, last weekend could have been the first one but sod's law it all imploded in time for the weekend..In an average year February and March tend to deliver a couple between them, indeed its often not until Feb things calm down for long enough to enable a longer calm clear cold spell with snow crisp on the fells, second half often jackpot time.

Tis a bit benign.  Anyone thinking of washing the salt off their cars this weekend?  Southern flow is bringing Saharan dust Sat, Sun, and into Monday.  Mild temps, and if it's clear there could be some orange sun rise and sunsets.

Morning guys & gals!

Looks like our next cold chase is off and running...

Just a couple of charts from this morning showing the vortex finally vacating Greenland, leaving the door open once again for cold. Still looking around about a week or so into Feb I reckon.

Winter certainly doesn't look over to me.

GFS & ECM

As others have said, a much calmer night last night. Overcast and dry here this morning, but does look like it is trying to brighten, currently 6.6C.

I'm off to the Lakes in two weeks for a walking weekend. I'm really hoping for a colder spell to provide some decent winter walking conditions. There is a signal for possible colder, wintry weather into the second week of February, but not holding my breath on that.

It’s a shame we couldn’t have held onto the Winter sunshine of yesterday but as others have said a usable, quiet kind of weather weekend. Monday looks potentially a rainy affair before turning very mild mid-late week before turning perhaps progressively colder as we go into the 2nd week of Feb.

Aside from the BFTE in late Feb 2018 notable February cold spells have been few and far between in recent years - the easterly in Feb 2021 wasn’t anything special here cold, raw & grey with polystyrene snow grains in the wind kind of set up. You then have to go even further back to early Feb 2012 which saw us catching the edge of a European cold wave bringing us some snow, Feb 2010 also was cold & snowy at times following on from the bitter January (I remember a deep right side of marginal snowfall for these parts mid-late month of that year) and early Feb 2009 brought snowfall although nowhere near the very heavy deep snow seen in the SE that year.

So it’ll be interesting to see if Feb is a boom or bust in regards to a cold end to winter - the earlier we can establish any cold & snow potential the better tbh as even with a stunning BFTE set up you are fighting a rapidly strengthening sun post Feb half term kind of time for any long lasting snow cover, ice day kind of cold to low levels... Peaks & Pennines don’t see that effect really till mid March. The drip drip 10cm of snow at breakfast, nothing but slush by lunchtime kind of snowfall is a habit of low ground snow events in late Feb into March.

A cloudy, murky morning but a bit of sunshine since then although it’s limited and better described as bright rather than sunny.

An improvement on the cloudy wet and windy we’ve seen for most of the week though and as already said, usable conditions for being outside.

this mornings 8c hardly felt mild in the cloud, hopefully a degree or so more this afternoon will feel better if the sun keeps making an appearance.

Felt like the first day of Spring. 8C, reasonably sunny and a slight breeze from the SE. Great walking conditions and really good to see so many people enjoying a breath of fresh along the Mersey valley. Even spotted a weasel and had a go at the RSPB's garden birdwatch. Quite a few Snowdrops out and even a few of the weird red flowers on the Hazel.

After the deluge of last summer, autumn and early winter as long as it stays dry I can live with a lack of snow. I'm sure HLB will occur in late Feb and give us a few weeks of cool north-westerlys with a bit of snow on the hills and possibly the odd overnight surprise. The chances of any prolonged cold seems remote.

@Sun dog snap doing the RSPB birdwatch thing too.. haven’t put out bird feeders for two years but now have four out… our resident robins making good use of them… always follows me about the garden when doing jobs out… bull finches, gold finches and blue tits about… luckily don’t have starlings here, noisy blighters 😂 haven’t seen our woodpeckers recently 🧐

lots of bulbs poking out in the last week… certainly feels more springlike atm…
